Curriculum Framework Unit: Clothing

Standard(s): 4.3.2 – Identify the basic parts of a sewing machine and function of
each

Materials and equipment needed for lesson:

 Guided notes
 Large print-out of sewing machine
 Fly swatter
 Bowls
 Slips of paper that include sewing equipment on them (printed or hand-written)

Objectives: The learners will be able to…..

1. Identify the basic parts of a sewing machine and function of each.

2. Review for sewing equipment test.

Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

“Hello everyone! Today we are going to learn about the rest of the sewing machine, but

before we start I want us to review some of what we did yesterday. If you will grab your

sewing equipment boxes, we are going to do a speed version of the game we played

yesterday. I am going to call out an item and say “1, 2, 3, Go!” When I say go you’re

going to look through your box and find the item, place it in front of you, and raise your

hand. Today, only the first two people to raise their hands will get points. Are we ready?”
Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Questions:

1. Do you think sewing is important in the modern world?

2. What career skills are you practicing when learning how to sew?

Content to be presented in lesson:

“Nice work everyone, I’m glad we had the chance to quickly review what we learned

yesterday! If you all will go back to the same sewing machine you were at yesterday, we

are going to finish learning about the different parts of the sewing machine.”

Stitch width regulator: This part of the machine changes how wide the stitches

are going to be when they go side to side.

Stitch length regulator: This is used to make machine stitches longer or shorter,

depending on what you are trying to do.

Presser foot: The presser foot holds the fabric down against the feed dogs.

Presser foot lifter: The presser foot lifter is what moves the presser foot up and

down. It allows you to put fabric underneath the presser foot.

Needle: This is what goes in and out of your fabric to make the stitches.

Feed Dogs: These move your fabric. They lift and move the fabric forward so

that you don’t have to feed it through the machine.

Bobbin: This is the lower part of the thread. The needle catches it in order to

make stitches.

Bobbin case: This holds the bobbin inside of it.

Bobbin compartment: This is usually partially underneath the bobbin case. It

holds the bobbin spool inside.

Foot pedal: This is what makes your machine go. It is very similar to a pedal in a

car.

Reverse lever: This allows you to backstitch. It changes the direction of the

stitches.

“Nice work everyone! If you will make sure your machine is all cleaned up and return to

your seats. We’re going to review for our test that will take place next class.”
