Mid Question Fluid

1. The document is the mid-semester examination for the course Fluid Mechanics II at Sonargaon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering. It contains 4 questions worth a total of 30 marks to test students' knowledge of fluid mechanics concepts and theorems. 2. Students must answer any 3 out of the 4 questions. Question 1 defines Buckingham π Theorem and proves a relationship for the power of a centrifugal pump. Question 2 involves dynamic similarity for a submarine model and pressure drops in a scaled air duct model. Question 3 calculates ship and model resistances using dynamic similarity. Question 4 classifies types of fluid flow and derives a relationship for fully developed laminar pipe flow velocities.

SONARGAON UNIVERSITY (SU)

Department: Mechanical Engineering

Program: B. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering
Mid Semester Examination, Spring-2022
Section: ME0122-Oganesson
Course Code: ME 323
Course Title: Fluid Mechanics II
Name of the Course Teacher: Injamam Ul Islam
Time: 1.5 Hours
Full Marks: 30

Instruction: (i) Assume any reasonable value for missing data.

(ii) Marks in the right margin indicate marks of the question.

Answer any 3 questions out of 4 questions. All questions are of equal value.

For values X & Y: Last two Digits of your ID.[ID: _ _ _ _ _ _ XY]

1. a. Define Buckinghum π Theorem. 2

b. The power unit P to a centrifugal pump is a function of the volume flow Q, impeller 8
diameter D, rotational rate Ω(per second), and the density ρ and viscosity μ of the fluid.
Proof that,
𝑃 𝑄 μ
= 𝑓( 3 , )
3 5
ρΩ 𝐷 ΩD ρΩ𝐷2
2. a. A 1:1X model of a submarine is to be tested in a towing tank containing salt water. If the 3
submarine moves away at 5.3Y m/s. At what velocity should model be towed for dynamic
similarity.
b. A geometrically similar model of an air duct is built to 1:2X scale and tested with water 7
which is 50 times more viscous and 800 times denser than air. When tested under
dynamically similar conditions, the pressure drop is Y bat in model. Find the corresponding
pressure drop in the full scale prototype.

3. a. A ship 30X m long moves in sea-water, whose density is 1030 kg/m3, A 1:10Y model of 7
this ship is to be tested in a wind tunnel. The velocity of air in the wind tunnel around the
model is 3Y m/s and the resistance of the model is 6X N. Determine the velocity of ship in
sea-water and also the resistance of the ship in sea-water. The density of air is given as
1.24 kg/m3. Take the kinematic viscosity of sea-water and air as 0.012 stokes and 0.018
stokes respectively.
b. The sloshing of oil in a tank is affected by both viscous and gravitational 3
effects. A 1:Y scale model of oil with kinematic viscosity of 1.1x10-4
m2/s is to be tested to study the sloshing. Find the kinematic viscosity
of liquid to be used in the model.

4. a. Write down the classification of all types of flow. 2

b. Show that, “For a fully developed laminar viscous flow through a circular pipe, the 8
maximum velocity is equal to twice the average velocity.”
