CFD Project - Jan 2022

This document outlines a CFD project for students to simulate heat transfer in a heat exchanger. Students are assigned to groups and each group will simulate a different configuration of the heat exchanger based on parameters specified in Table 1, including the shape, number and arrangement of heaters as well as the inlet velocity and temperature. Students must write a report between 8-15 pages discussing the simulation setup, results including temperature and velocity contours, and conclusions. The report will be graded based on inclusion of specific sections and overall quality.

CEB 4053: TRANSPORT PHENOMENA

CFD PROJECT (JAN 2022 SEMESTER)

ULEARN SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 25th MARCH 2020 (FRIDAY, 5 PM)

PROJECT TITLE: CFD SIMULATION OF HEAT EXCHANGER EQUIPMENT

In this project, water (liquid) enters to a heat exchanger at 25 °C as a laminar flow and after
contacting with the heater, its temperature increases. There are three different heaters which
include circle (C), ellipse (E) and square (S)). These heaters are located at the middle of heat
exchanger as depicted in the Figure 1. Heater shape and arrangement, inlet velocity and heater
temperature are varying based on group number. Table 1 represents group number and
simulation details.

Figure 1. Schematic of heat exchanger with dimensions and details.

Instruction
Each group shall perform CFD simulations based on the conditions highlighted in Table 1. Write
a report that covers the simulated results and elaborate the results based on the theory of
transport phenomena.

The project report should consist:

1. Introduction about heat exchanger (2 Marks)
2. Governing Equations and Simulation Method (5 Marks)
3. Results & Discussion - geometry, velocity and temperature contours/profile and other
relevant plots (15 marks)
4. Conclusions (3 Marks)
5. References (2 Marks)
6. Report format- Title, neatness, number page, table of content (3 marks)

The limit of the total pages is between 8 -15 pages. Students are expected to produce a good
technical report. Each group shall only submit one report in ulearn before 25th March 2022 (5
pm).
