Thyroid Disorders Testing Algorithm

This document outlines the testing process for evaluating thyroid disorders. It recommends ordering a thyroid stimulating hormone test with reflex to free thyroxine to determine if levels are low, normal, or high, indicating possible hyperthyroidism, euthyroidism, or hypothyroidism. Additional tests like triiodothyronine, total and thyroid antibodies may be ordered depending on TSH and free thyroxine results to further evaluate the type of thyroid disease present. A radioactive iodine thyroid scan and uptake may also be considered to facilitate treatment decisions.
