Science and Technology in The Philippines:: A Historical Perspective

Science and technology in the Philippines has a long history dating back to the pre-colonial era. During the Spanish colonial period, formal education in religion, reading, writing and other subjects was introduced. Several universities were also established. The American period saw a focus on agriculture, food processing, forestry, pharmacy and medicine. Many research institutions and councils were formed from the 1900s onwards to promote science and technology. Subsequent presidents also made efforts to develop science and technology through various policies, programs and laws.
