Performance - Task - Lab - Report (With Answer) Coffee Powdered

The student performed an experiment to observe how adding different amounts of a solute (powdered coffee) to a solvent (water) affected the solutions. They added 1/4 teaspoon, 1 teaspoon, and 2 teaspoons of powdered coffee to 3 cups of water, respectively. They observed that the first solution was a light brown color, indicating an unsaturated solution. The second solution was brown, representing a saturated solution. The third solution was dark brown, showing it was a supersaturated solution. The student concluded that adding more solute results in darker colored solutions and described the differences between unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions.

NAME: Grechelle Audrey T. Casmo SCORE:

GR & SEC: 7 - OLF

PERFORMANCE TASK

MATERIALS:

 3 glass or 3plastic cups

 Any of the following:  Powdered juice, Powdered coffee or powdered food color
 3 spoons
 1 Liter of water

PROCEDURE:

1.    Fill the 3 cups or glass with water about 1/2  of the size of the cup or glass
2.    Add 1/4 teaspoon of solute in the first cup and stir.
3.    Add 1 teaspoon of solute in the second cup and stir the solution.
4.    Add 2 teaspoon of solute in the third cup and stir the solution.
6.   Observe the appearance of solution and describe the appearance of the following
solutions.

QUESTIONS:
1. Identify the solute and solvent in your experiment.
The solute is powdered coffee and the solvent is water.

2. Describe the result of your experiment.

Glass/Cup Appearance
The color is light brown Unsaturated solution is a solution that
First contains less solute than the maximum amount the solvent
can dissolve at a given temperature. Its color is usually
lighter than saturated and supersaturated solutions.
The color is brown Saturated solution is a solution that
Second contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved by a
given amount of solvent. The color is intermediate of
unsaturated and supersaturated solutions.
The color is dark brown Supersaturated solution is a solution
Third that contains more solute than the maximum amount the
solvent can dissolve at a given temperature. Its color is
darker than unsaturated and saturated solutions. It has an
excess solute or sugar which can no longer dissolve.

3. Write your conclusion about the experiment.

I therefore conclude that the more I add powdered coffee to the water the darker
color the solution will have. A saturated solution is a solution in which the maximum
amount of solute has been dissolved. An unsaturated solution is where additional
solute can be added to the solvent and a supersaturated solution is when a solution
contains more solute.
