GEN. PHYSICS 1 (Week 8)

This document contains a student's answers to questions about the Law of Universal Gravitation. The student explains that: 1) If one mass increases by a factor of 3, the gravitational force increases by 3 times. If both masses increase by 3, the force increases by 9 times. 2) We do not feel gravitational attraction from most objects because their masses are too small to cause a noticeable force. 3) If the distance between two objects doubles, the gravitational force decreases to one-fourth of the initial force. The student then calculates gravitational forces between various astronomical bodies using Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation.

LAW OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION

Direction: Answer the questions briefly. For problem solving, show your complete solution.
1. What happens to the gravitational force between two bodies if one of the masses is increased by a
factor of three?

➜ If one of the masses between two bodies is increased by a factor of three, then the gravitational force
will be three times greater than its initial force.

What if both masses are increased by a factor of 3?

➜ If both masses are increased by a factor of three, the gravitational force will be nine times greater
than its initial force.
2. According to Newton’s Universal Law of Gravity, we should feel a force of attraction from all objects
around us. Why is it then that we do not feel it?

➜ We do not feel the force of attraction from all the objects around us because the mass of most
objects is too small to cause a force large enough to move objects toward each other.

3. If you double the distance between two objects, how does the gravitational force change?

➜ If you double the distance between two objects, then the gravitational force will become one-fourth
of its initial force.

4. What is the force of gravity between the Sun and the Earth? (Assume the distance between the Sun
and the Earth is 1.49×1011 m.)

➜ Hence, the force of gravity between the Sun and the Earth is 3.57 × 10 22 N.
5. Calculate the change in the force between two objects of mass m and M, if the distance between
them is doubled.

➜ So, the change in force between two objects of mass m and M, if the distance between them is
doubled, is 0.40 N.

6. Calculate the difference in the force between two objects of mass m and M, if the mass of one of the
objects is doubled.

➜ Thus, the new gravitational force as m1 is doubled becomes 1.42 × 1053 N.

➜ Hence, the new gravitational force as m 2 is doubled becomes 4.25 × 1047 N.

7. Calculate the gravitational force between:

a. Sun and Mars

➜ Thus, the gravitational force between Sun and Mars is 1.63 × 10 21 N.

b. Sun and Venus

➜ Thus, the gravitational force between Sun and Venus is 5.54 × 10 22 N.

c. Sun and Jupiter

➜ Thus, the gravitational force between Sun and Jupiter is 4.17 × 10 23 N.
