Design: Hansje Van Halem - Sketches Edition 4
Design: Hansje Van Halem - Sketches Edition 4
The fourth in a series of publications produced in cooperation with Dutch publishing house
Uitgeverij de Buitenkant, 'Sketches' was designed by Hansje van Halem. Since establishing her
own studio in 2003, the graphic designer has been working on alphabets, patterns, textures, and
more. Van Halem's designs are layered graphic landscapes that invite the gaze to linger. Trippy
colours, eye-catching surfaces, and quirky complexities evoke memories of episodes from the
history of design. The focus here is on the domain of the printer: ink and paper, line and grid,
overprint and knockout. It is an interplay of experimentation and a search for variation, full of
surprises and serendipity.

DESIGN
Surrealism has influenced every aspect of the 20th century. In the world of fashion, new ideas
that had absorbed its influence were realised thanks to creators who, anticipating the image of a
new era, reflected the spirit of the age while producing innovative fashion that overlapped with the
surrealists' ideals. Conversely, the surrealists drew inspiration from clothing and things such as
coats, dresses, hats, and gloves, which provided the stimulus for numerous artworks. Published
in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, this
volume explores the expressive beauty that generated opportunities and sensations in the
fashion world.
