Advantages and disadvantages of online teaching and learning

Ever since the arrival of the pandemic, a lot of activities have been cancelled,
including schools and universities. This leads to a new format of teaching and learning
to be popular, that is hosting online class. All around the world, lots of learning
insitutions are adapting this kind of new platform in order to let the students keep up
with their learning process. Just like other methods, online class also has its positive
and negative sides. When I started to learn online with my friends, I find this topic
pretty interesting, especially this has become a popular controversy that seems to be
endless. Some people claim that learning online is a great way to continue learning
without any interruptions, meanwhile the other consider it to be dull and meaningless,
even very harmful to students. In this essay, the upsides and downsides of online
teaching and studying are going to be discussed, and the writer’s opinion is included.

From a teacher’s perspective, there are many mentionable advantages that can be
listed here. First of all, it will help teachers to have a new experience. Instead of
having tradional teaching method, nowadays, teachers are going to deliver their
lessons through their computer. They will have to get used to interacting with students
through computer’s screen. This seems to be a new thing for almost every teacher,
since not everyone knows how to teach online before. Beside that, with online classes,
teachers does not have to write anything on the board anymore, they can prepare the
presentation files for classes. Doing that is not easy at all, but if it is being done
properly, the lessons will be much more effective and leave a deep impression for
students. This can also be adapted for offline classes too. When schools come back,
teachers can use the experience of doing presentation online for the offline class in
order to make their lectures much more powerful. One more noticeable advantage that
can not be ignored is that teaching online classes are very comfortable. There are no
trips to be taken, teachers can stay right at their home or any location they like and
continue to teach. This is the best option that is available at the moment and everyone
is still following it. All they need is a place with good internet connection.

Online classes also bring a lot of benefits for learners. Firstly, it will help students to
open up more. Maybe when being asked on offline classes, some students feel very
shy and uncomfortable in front of everyone. With this new learning platform, it sure
helps for the introverts to feel much more comfortable and confident to answer any
questions. From time to time, they can improve themselves and eventually become
more confident to face any problems. Furthurmore, learning online will test students
about their studying motivation. Online classes keep students on a regular schedule of
making and meeting deadlines, give them opportunities to practice managing time
skills. During this time, students will have to keep themselves motivated in order to
complete all the assignments on time. If they can get through this test, it surely will
prove that they have what it takes to be a good employee, which is very necessary at
the moment. Furthurmore, by learning online course, students will have chances to
develop their technical skills. In order to keep up with the online platform, students
will have to get used to a number of digital tools. They will have remote
communicating skills, which is pretty popular nowadays. In the long run, every student
can easily master these application tools, plus with their remote communicating skills
can be the keys to be successful for them in the future.

However, there are still some undeniable negative impact that can not be ignored.
From the teacher’s prespective, the classes may get a bit frustated since not every
student are willing to answer any questions. This occurs a lot during many classes that
do not require students to turn on their camera. It helps the connection work better, but
it has a downside that teachers do not know what the students are doing over there.
And when the students do not response, it sure will make any teachers frustated.
Moreover, some teachers can get this isolation feeling when they have to constantly
talking in front of a screen for a long time everyday. It might get to them and make
them feel pretty bored and even stressful. Another thing that causes headache for every
teacher, that is cheating. With the situation at the moment, this is the best chance for
any students to cheat. They can easily look up the answer online, look up for the model
answers of any writing pieces, then just copy them down. It kills off the creativity lies
in students. The teachers will have to come up with an idea that is smart and
appropriate for students to do examination without cheating, but still doable, which is
the exact thing that drives anyone nuts.

As for the students, they might face a lot of difficulties realted to technology. Not
everyone have good internet connection and have every equipment that are required by
the schools. Also lagging could easily make the students uninterested in the lessons,
since they could not understand what the lecture is about, and teachers could not see
whether the students understand or not. That is why lots of students complain that
learning online does not help at all since they could not understand anything. Another
main problem is that it can easily cause distraction for learners. They might get bored
of the lecture and tab out doing other thing, like playing video games, chatting with
friends, playing music, going out cooking something, or going to sleep. And the worst
thing is, the teachers would never know whether they are stil listening to what they
say, or they have tab out and do other things. It will definitely leave a bad impact on
the learning process, since students do not pay attention to the lecture at all, and it can
get the students bad results in the end. So, there must be any way in order to control
this situation.

In conclusion, online learning is a brand new platform, and it sure is an interesting

experience for both the teachers and the learners. It have some advantages for both of
them, it is the convienient it brings, this is the best way that is available for the
situation at the moment, and both students and teachers do not have to spend anytime
to travel to edcating insitutions. But still, it can not be denied that there are lots of
problems relating to this style of educating, mostly related to technical issues and
distraction and feeling of isolation. However, I believe that if we overcome the
technical issues, technology surely will be an effective tools for teaching and learning.
