A Study of Using Crushed Mussel Shell As An Additive For Concrete II

The document discusses a study on using crushed mussel shells as an additive in concrete. Three concrete mixtures with 2%, 4%, and 6% crushed mussel shells by weight were tested and compared to conventional concrete. Test results showed compressive strength and unit weight decreased as crushed shell content increased, while workability also reduced, though strengths still met standards. The study recommends further examining mussel shell properties and reducing shell size.

CRUSHED MUSSEL SHELL AS AN ADDITIVE

FOR CONCRETE

Green mussel, which is locally known as Tahong, is described as a large

bivalve with smooth, elongated shell. These Mussels are cultured and farmed for

its meat. Once green mussels’ meats are consumed, considerable amount of

shell wastes are generated that are usually dumped to landfills or are incinerated.

Green mussel shells have greatly contributed to the tons of solid wastes

generated in the Philippines. This experimental study aims to utilize mussel

shells as a concrete additive and determine the how the concrete with crushed

mussel shell as an additive would perform compared to a conventional concrete

mixture in terms of compressive strength, unit weight and workability.

A STUDY OF USING CRUSHED MUSSEL SHELL AS AN ADDITIVE FOR CONCRETE ii

The experiment is comprised of three mix designs that contained crushed

mussel shells. The shells were added in dissimilar proportions namely, 2%, 4%

and 6% of the total weight of the design mixture. These mixes were all compared

to the conventional mixture and undergone series of tests. The tests conducted

were Slump Test (ASTM C1437 / C1437M), Compressive Strength Test (ASTM

C39 / C39M) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Analysis. The weight of

all the samples were also determined and compared to the conventional mixture

of concrete.

Results show that crushed mussel shells decreases the compressive

strength of the conventional concrete mixture however, each concrete samples

still reaches the minimum compressive strength set by the ASTM Standard which

is 3000 psi. The weight of the concrete also decreases as the percentage of the

added crushed mussel shell increases. It is also evident from the results that the

workability of the concrete mixture is reduced.

From the analysis of the results it can be inferred that as the amount of

crushed mussel shells increases, the compressive strength and unit weight of the

concrete decreases. Furthermore, certain properties of mussel shells contributed

to the reduction of its compressive strength, workability and unit weight. The size

of the additive also contributes to the decreasing changes.

The researchers highly recommend examining thoroughly on the physical

and chemical properties of mussel shells; reduce the size of the mussel shell and

add additional curing process to extract chemical properties present in the

mussel shell that may contribute to the strength of concrete.
