The Portrait Value Questionnaire (Pvq-21) Female Version Instructions

This document contains instructions and scoring information for two psychological assessments: 1) The Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ-21), which measures 10 personal values using a series of statements rated on a 6-point scale. Scores for each value are computed by averaging ratings for the relevant items. 2) The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), a self-report measure of psychological distress over the past few weeks. Scores range from 0-36, with scores above 15 suggesting distress and above 20 considered severe distress.

THE PORTRAIT VALUE QUESTIONNAIRE (PVQ-21) FEMALE VERSION

Instructions
Below are some statements that describe a person. Read them carefully and respond to how each
statement resonates with you as a person.
SCORING
To compute a score for each of the ten values for an individual, use the items that index it from Table
4.2. The items are numbered from 1 to 21. Items that measure the same value were spread throughout
the survey rather than clustered together..

Table 4.2. Value, item number

Values Items in index
Conformity 7,16
Tradition 9,20
Benevolence 12,18
Universalism 3,8,19
Self-Direction 1,11
Stimulation 6,15
Hedonism 10,21
Achievement 4,13
Power 2,17
Security 5,14
The score for each value is the mean of the raw ratings given to the items listed in table 4.2 for that
value. You could compute these means in two different ways. You could either add the items together
and divide the sum by the number of items, for example; Security = (nimpsafe + nipstrgv) / 2, or you
could use a function called MEAN. Using the first alternative, a respondent must have answered both
questions to get a valid value on the index; the latter alternative will still compute a mean even if only
one question is answered. The first method uses all items, and is thus more accurate. The second
method ensures that as many as possible of the respondents get a valid value on the index.

THE GENERALHEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE 12

SCORING
The GHQ-12 measure has standardized instructions as well as scoring interpretations for the clinician
to follow and is administered as a self-report in which the subject is asked to consider 12 questions
and how they relate to his or her personal life over the past few weeks. Total scores range from 0 to
36 with a score of 11 or 12 considered typical, scores > 15 suggesting evidence of distress, and scores
> 20 are considered severe problems with psychological distress.
