Practical Research Week 3

Activity 1
Three Types of Approach to Basic Research
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH APPROACH - Quantitative research can be used in response to relational questions of variables
within the research. “Quantitative researchers seek explanations and predictions that will generate to other persons and
places.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH APPROACH - Qualitative research is a holistic approach that involves discovery. Qualitative research
is also described as an unfolding model that occurs in a natural setting that enables the researcher to develop a level of detail
from high involvement in the actual experiences (Creswell, 1994).
MIXED METHODS APPROACH - The mixed methods approach to research is an extension of rather than a replacement for the
quantitative and qualitative approaches to research, as the latter two research approaches will continue to be useful and
important (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004).
Hard” sciences include things like physics, math, and chemistry, while “soft” sciences include things like sociology and
philosophy. The terms hard and soft refer strictly to the way the scientific method is used.
What is it?
Qualitative research aims to get a better understanding through first hand experience, truthful reporting, and quotations of
actual conversations. It aims to understand how the participants derive meaning from their surroundings, and how their
meaning influences their behaviour.
Interactive interviewing
Written descriptions by participants
Observation
Interactive interviewing by asking your interviewee about his/her experiences in the certain phenomenon. Second, written
descriptions by participants, whatever the participants says must be written to gather data. Lastly, observation. You must
observe in the surroundings of what's happening in order to collect data.

Additional Activities
Title : PROJECT SIGN LANGUAGE: A TOOL IN BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN PARENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRED LEARNERS
a. Participants and Other Source of Data Information
This study involved twenty one (21) parents of hearing impaired learners in Santa Cruz Elementary School. The respondents
are parents of learners with hearing impairment who attended class during the previous school year and had face to face
learning of sign language.
b. Data Gathering / Method
The proponents of the study aimed to determine communication challenges faced by parents of children with hearing
impairment by the selected parents of Santa Cruz Elementary School in Santa Cruz, Laguna for School Year 2020-2021. The
researchers will randomly choose ten (10) parents - respondents of a child with hearing impairment out of twenty - one (21)
pupils of the Special Education Center at Santa Cruz Central Elementary School at Santa Cruz, Laguna. It was limited to the
areas of investigation such as the level of the parents’ communication challenges on children with hearing impairment during
the new normal of education. The profile of the parents and learning situation factor significantly related to the parents’
communication challenges to children with hearing impairment during this time of pandemic.
The researchers used printed materials of survey given through home visitation and Google forms for the monitoring of
Parents Communication Challenges with Learners with Hearing Impaired in Modular and Online Distance Learning.
The printed survey, and Google forms can gather data by collecting the forms and Google form survey results. The researcher
chooses the method because it is very accessible and affordable to use.
Parents of Hearing Impaired Learners
During this time of pandemic, learners undergo distance learning either modular or online. Parents are the ones who
facilitated their learning, aside from their teachers therefore communication between parents and Hearing Impaired learners
become a hindrance.

Work experience
What is it?
Topic 1: Best way to learn online
As a student, I think the most relevant topic for me to do research is about studies. In that way, I would be able to know the
best and most effective way to learn my lessons. It would also help me utilize my time. In addition, learning the best way to
study could be beneficial to me in the long run.
Topic 2: Online business
Another topic that I find interesting is about online business. Covid pandemic has affected all major establishments, hence,
most people couldn't go back to their previous work. By knowing about online business, we'll be able to continue earning
money despite being at home and under quarantine. Doing research about the topic could help my parents start their online
business
Good Examples
Wifi-Connection: Enhancing The Quality Of Education.
A qualitative research on the influence of having a free internet connection at school to the academic performance of Junior
and Senior High School Students. "To have a good research title, the researcher first needs to know what kind if research
he/she will conduct." so it actually depends on the kind of research you'll be doing, because if you use one wrong word not
related to the kind if research you'll be conducting can make your title a poor title and in worst case scenario, you might
need to change your research title.
Bad Examples
The Susceptibility of Senior High Students with regards to Promiscuity, Illegal Drugs, and Cigarette Smoking
The topic was too broad.
What’s more?
Topic Climate change
Sub – topics The effect of cutting trees, Climate change causes, two
different kind of climate change.
What sub-topics are of most interest to you? Climate change causes
What new questions do you have about your topic? Are climate change has many bad effect in the world? What
will happen if we experience a long term El Niño? What
about El Niña?

Develop a topic statement I will explore the bad benefits of air pollution, specially
focusing the carbon dioxide that affects the climate change.

What I have learned?

Choosing an interesting research topic is your first challenge. Here are some tips:
Choose a topic that you are interested in! The research process is more relevant if you care about your topic.
Narrow your topic to something manageable.
If your topic is too broad, you will find too much information and not be able to focus.
Background reading can help you choose and limit the scope of your topic.
Review the guidelines on topic selection outlined in your assignment.  Ask your professor or TA for suggestions.
Refer to lecture notes and required texts to refresh your knowledge of the course and assignment.
Talk about research ideas with a friend.  S/he may be able to help focus your topic by discussing issues that didn't occur to
you at first.
Think of the who, what, when, where and why questions:
WHY did you choose the topic?  What interests you about it?  Do you have an opinion about the issues involved?
WHO are the information providers on this topic?  Who might publish information about it?  Who is affected by the topic?
Do you know of organizations or institutions affiliated with the topic?
WHAT are the major questions for this topic?  Is there a debate about the topic?  Are there a range of issues and viewpoints
to consider?
WHERE is your topic important: at the local, national or international level?  Are there specific places affected by the topic?
WHEN is/was your topic important?  Is it a current event or an historical issue?  Do you want to compare your topic by time
periods?
What I can do?
1.
a. I wrote an essay or reflection about my time being a student in this school.
b. One of my life experiences I have encountered is the time I travelled to Real Quezon with my family. It was very happy and
we also bought fish from the sea and many more.
c. Issues that I have observed is the global health crisis of all time which is COVID19. This is the greatest challenge we have
faced since WW2.
2. Benefits of Getting into the Sea

Additional Activities

Many people see the ocean as a way to relax and get away from the chaos of everyday life. However, the benefits of
swimming in the ocean extend beyond stress-relieving qualities. It strengthens muscles, increases endurance, boosts skin
health and can even improve your mood. Swimming in the sea could potentially be beneficial to mental health.
Swimming in the ocean is classified as open water swimming. There's a reason that open water swimming is part of fitness
competitions such as triathlons — this type of exercise challenges your body differently to your typical workout in a
swimming pool. Sea water has long been recognized for its potential health benefits — one of the advantages of swimming
in the ocean. In fact, the famous Dead Sea is well-known for its healing properties.

Lesson 2
Activity 1
Chapter 1 in a research paper is called The Problem and its Background or also called introduction. Its sections consist of the
background of the study, problem statement, scope and delimitation, and the importance of what the study demonstrates.
Each of these sections is important in developing research. It presents a brief background of the study, it also states a clear
objective interest in the study, sets the boundaries and parameters of the study, and demonstrates the benefits of the study
to address the issue and 1 problems.
A research topic is a specific part of study in a broader area of study while a research problem aims to further narrow down
the scope of the study.
GUIDELINES IN WRITING STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Describe how things should work.
Explain the problem and state why it matters.
Explain your problem's financial costs.
Back up your claims.
Propose a solution.
Explain the benefits of your proposed solution(s).
Conclude by summarizing the problem and solution.
It clarifies why specific data points have been collected whilst others have been excluded. Without this, it is difficult to define
an end point for a study or complete it within a reasonable time frame since no limits have been defined on the work that
could take place.

2.The illustration is simply means you need to focus on one subject matter. Don't ever add unnecessary information that will
make confusions on your chosen topic. Make your research work precise, relevant and to the point.

What I have learned

A research proposal is a concise and coherent summary of your proposed research. It sets out the central issues or questions
that you intend to address. It outlines the general area of study within which your research falls, referring to the current
state of knowledge and any recent debates on the topic.
The rationale of your research problem is the reason for conducting the study. The rationale should answer the need for
conducting the said research. It is a very important part of your publication as it justifies the significance and novelty of your
research problem.
The research setting can be seen as the physical, social, and cultural site in which the researcher conducts the study. ... These
play a significant role in determining the subject of study, the participants, and thereby the setting.
Key Concept: One of the basic principles of style for effective technical writing is ... Paragraphs should be kept short to be
reader- friendly. ... Definition: The meaning a reader understands.
A literature review is “an important chapter in the thesis, where its purpose is to provide the background to and justification
for the research .The goal of the conceptual literature review is to categorize and describe concepts relevant to your study or
topic and outline a relationship The purpose of tertiary literature is to provide an overview of ... which provides a review of
related research and develops
Significance of the study and the research question or hypotheses to the follow.places the problem into particular context
The general objective of your study states what you expect to achieve in general terms. Specific objectives break down the
general objective into smaller, logically connected parts that systematically address the various aspects of the problem.
Everyone. Regardless of the type of research. Not only does research help out current faults and problems, it also can inspire
others to invent and create better products or services. Example, depression medication. While researching new
antidepressants, they found some of these medications also helped muscle and nerve issues

PROJECT SIGN LANGUAGE: A TOOL IN BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN PARENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRED LEARNERS
During this time of pandemic, learners undergo distance learning either modular or online. Parents are the ones who
facilitated their learning, aside from their teachers therefore communication between parents and Hearing Impaired learners
become an hindrance, hence this action research is conducted.
What is the status of parents' involvement with hearing impaired learners in their performance task?
What are the difficulties encountered by parents in assessing hearing impaired learners?
What is the significant effect of Project Sign Language to the performance of hearing impaired learners?
What I can do?
In a modular distance learning setting, parents need to assist their children as they study their modules at home, which is
difficult for parents who do not have education, especially in Sign Language. Some parents did not doubt their ability to teach

5
but faced challenges in the discipline of having a system to facilitate instruction. In the time of pandemic, the approach
changed because classes that are taken inside their home.
The researchers seek to determine the communication challenges faced by parents of children with hearing impairment
during this time of pandemic. The study attempted to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the parents with a child with special needs in terms of:
a. Age;
b. Gender;
c. Educational attainment;
d. Number of siblings and
e. Socioeconomic status?
2. What is the status of parents' involvement with hearing impaired learners in their performance task?
3. What are the difficulties encountered by parents in assessing hearing impaired learners?
4. What is the significant effect of Project Sign Language to the performance of hearing impaired learners?

The proponents of the study aimed to determine communication challenges faced by parents of children with hearing
impairment by the selected parents of Santa Cruz Elementary School in Santa Cruz, Laguna for School Year 2020-2021. The
researchers will randomly choose ten (10) parents - respondent of a child with hearing impairment out of twenty - one (21)
pupils of Special Education Center at Santa Cruz Central Elementary School at Santa Cruz, Laguna.
It was limited to the areas of investigation such as the level of the parents’ communication challenges on children with
hearing impairment during the new normal of education. The profile of the parents and learning situation factor significantly
related to the parents’ communication challenges to children with hearing impairment during this time of pandemic.
The concern of the parents is to be able to reduce the burden and reassure the students that belong to those with special
needs to survive. Therefore, the community, especially parents, need advice, knowledge and assistance so that individual
students can be appropriately guided during modular and online distance learning and connect the communication gap
between them and their child with hearing impairment. In connection to this, lack of applicable strategies was one of the
parents’ difficulties in coping with the lessons to be taught to their children.
