BARANGAY NUTRITION COMMITTE

Committee, (BNC) Brgy. Hulong Duhat

II. RATIONALE OF THE PROJECT

One of the most important nutritional deficiency problem affecting our country is Protein Energy
Malnutrition (PEM) manifested by growth failure due to quantitatively insufficient and often quantitatively
inadequate dietary intake of food rich in protein and carbohydrates associated with recurrent infections
predominantly among children. Vitamin A, Iron, and Iodine deficiencies are also nutritional problems affecting our
vulnerable groups.

In the City of Malabon, this nationwide problem can be magnified based on the mass weighing or
“Operation Timbang” result conducted annually in all of its 21 Barangays.

Based on the latest 2009 OPT survey at Barangay Hulong Duhat, it showed that among the 1,980 pre-
schoolers weighed, 92 of them were suffering from very low and low malnutrition respectively. This would indicate
a prevalence rate of 4.6 % malnourished children in the area. This rate can be attributed to the the following factors:
low employment rate, low literacy among the member of the households, poor environmental sanitation practices,
large family size resulting to improper food distribution, poor eating habits etc. Thus the provision of nutritionally
rich foods to the aforementioned malnourished children with intensive education to mothers would be most
beneficial and highly recommended in the area .

III. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The Supplementary Feeding Program will be implemented in Hulong Duhat Puericulture Center with the
following activities:

1.) Daily heavy snacks of energy-protein rich foods five (5) days in a week which will be prepared
by participating mothers for thirty (20) days.
