Self-Learning Module 9
Practical Applications of UV
Radiation and X-rays
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 10 Self-Learning Module 9 on Practical Applications

of UV Radiation and X-rays

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 10 Self-Learning Module 9 on Practical Applications

of UV Radiation and X-rays

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectations - This points to the set of knowledge and skills

that you will learn after completing the module.

Pretest - This measures your prior knowledge about the lesson

at hand.

Recap - This part of the module provides a review of concepts

and skills that you already know about a previous lesson.

lesson.

Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATIONS

Have you ever seen a cashier place your 1000- and 500-peso bill under a
violet-colored lamp? Have you ever been scanned for an x-ray and wonder how they
have taken a picture of your bones that are inside your body?

As you have learned in the previous years, the light you use to see is only a
small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Beyond the visible spectrum, you have
other parts invisible to the naked eye. Though invisible it can help you see things
that otherwise would have been near impossible to see plainly.

UV rays and x-rays both invisible help us see beyond what the human eye can
see. UV rays help us detect real money from fake money. X-rays help see bones inside
the body without opening it. X-rays also help us find cracks and breaks inside
buildings to keep us safe and free from harm.

For this lesson, we will be studying the applications of UV-rays and X-rays.

At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:

1. describe UV ray and X-ray;
2. list down applications of UV ray and X-ray; and
3. explain how UV ray and X-ray affect objects exposed to it.

PRETEST

Instructions: Read each item carefully. Then choose the letter of the correct
answer.

3. What electromagnetic waves are used to check for cracks in buildings?

A. Ultraviolet rays C. Gamma rays
B.X-Rays D. Visible light

4. Which of the following are arranged in order of increasing energy?

A. Visible light, Gamma ray, UV ray, X-ray
B. X-ray, Gamma Ray, Visible Light, UV ray
C. Visible light, UV ray, X-ray, Gamma ray
D. Gamma ray, X-ray, UV rays, Visible light
5. To ensure that “pasta” or dental fillings are solid and hard what process
must it undergo?
A. It must be exposed to X-rays.
B. Nothing, it will dry on its own.
C. It must be exposed to UV rays.
D. It must be sprayed with air to dry.

RECAP
The electromagnetic spectrum consists of multiple sections arranged in order
of wavelength, frequency, and energy. From radio waves, microwaves, infrared, and
visible light, EM waves have been incredibly useful to us. Pair the following parts of
the EM waves to its corresponding uses.

RADIOWAVES FIBER INTERNET

MICROWAVE DIGITAL THERMOMETER

INFRARED COMMUNICATION

VISIBLE LIGHT COOKING

LESSON

Ultraviolet radiation is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond the

visible light. Invisible to the human eye, ultraviolet (UV) radiation has a shorter
wavelength, greater frequency, and higher energy compared to visible light. UV
radiation has a wavelength ranging from 4x10-7 to 1x10-8 meters, the frequency range
of 7.5x1014 to 3x1016 Hz, energy ranging from 2x10-17 to 5x10-19 joules.

Ultraviolet waves may be invisible to human eyes, but when it comes in

contact with certain materials it would cause a glowing effect. UV lamps are used by
banks to identify fake banknotes from real ones. This is done by checking distinct
markings made by the bank that is difficult to replicate.
Figure 1: Bank notes under UV lamp
http://philmoney.blogspot.com/2007/06/security-feature-fluorescent-printing.html

Ultraviolet radiation is also useful in the field of medicine and sanitation,

forensics, and engineering. It can be used to kill germs and sanitize objects. UV can
detect the presence of body fluids left on surfaces. It can also detect bioluminescent
bacteria. UV is also used to harden photosensitive materials like those used in
dentistry. It triggers the production of vitamin D in the body.

X-rays come after UV rays. X-rays have higher energy and frequency but
shorter wavelength compared to UV rays, found between the frequency of 3x10 16 to
3x1019 Hz, wavelength from 1x10-11 to 1x10-8 meters, and contains energy ranging
from 2x10-17 to 2x10-14 joules

Discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen in 1895, X-rays can be produced

using an X-ray tube. X-rays can penetrate body flesh but not bones. By placing your
body between a photosensitive film and an X-ray tube, radiologists can get a 2d photo
of your bones. This X-ray scan is used to check for bone fractures and tumors inside
the body by using a CT scan. Similarly, X-rays can also check for cracks and breaks
in building structure even if it is inside the walls.
