Shaft Design Problem 10 - 12

1. The shaft connecting an exhaust turbine and supercharger on an airplane experiences a gyroscopic force when the plane makes a 30m radius turn at 15 mph. 2. Calculations show the gyroscopic force results in a dynamic bearing load of 244N at each of the two bearings supporting the shaft. 3. The bearing loads are determined by calculating the change in angular momentum of the turbine-supercharger assembly due to their precession during the turn, and distributing the resulting moment equally across the two bearings.
