Lesson 1 - Perspective On Educational Assessment, Measurement and Evalaution

Teachers must effectively assess, measure, and evaluate student learning to determine how successful their teaching is. This involves quantifying student learning through tests and other tools, gathering both formal and informal information about student performance, and making judgements about student skills, knowledge, and values. Proper assessment, measurement, and evaluation is important for improving student learning, identifying student strengths and weaknesses, assessing curriculum and teaching effectiveness, and communicating with parents. Teachers should use a variety of assessment methods and sources of information to continually check on and modify programs to promote student achievement.

Perspective on Educational

Assessment, Measurement and

Evaluation
As teaching is causing learning among
learners, teachers need to be thoroughly
aware of the processes in determining how
successful they are in the aforementioned
task. They need to know whether their
students are achieving successfully the
knowledge, skills and the values inherent in
their lessons.
Therefore, it is critical for beginning
teachers to build a repertoire of effective
strategies for performing their executive
function of assessment, measurement and
evaluation of student learning.
Measurement as used in education is the
quantification of what students learned
through the use of test, questionnaires, rating
scales, checklists, and other devices.
Assessment, however, refers to the full range of
information gathered and synthesized by
teachers about their classrooms. This
information can be gathered in informal ways,
such as through observation or verbal
exchange. It can also be gathered through
formal ways, such as assignment, tests and
written reports or outputs
Evaluation is a process of making judgments,
assigning value or deciding on the worth of
student’s performance.
Measurement answers the question, how
much does a student learn or know?
Assessment looks into how much change has
occurred on the student’s acquisition of skill,
knowledge or value before and after a given
learning experience. Since evaluation is
concerned with making judgments on the
worth or value of a performance, it answers
the question, how good, adequate or
desirable it is? Measurement and assessment
are both essential to evaluation.
Purposes of Educational Assessment,
Measurement and Evaluation
1. Improvement of student learning
2. Identification of students’ strengths and
weaknesses
3. Assessment of the effectiveness of a
particular teaching strategy
4. Appraisal of the effectiveness of the
curriculum
5. Assessment and improvement of teaching
effectiveness
6. Communication with and involvement of
parents in their children’s learning.
Types of Classroom Assessment
1. Official assessment

2. Sizing up assessment

3. Instructional assessment
Methods of collecting assessment
data:
1. Paper – and -pencil technique
supply type and selection type
2. Observation involves watching the students as
they perform certain learning task like
speaking and reading performing laboratory
investigation and participating in group
activities.
Sources of evaluative information
1. Cumulative Record
2. Personal Contact
3. Analysis
4. Open-ended themes and diaries
5. Conferences
6. Testing
Types of Evaluation
1. Diagnostic evaluation

2. Formative evaluation

3. Summative evaluation
Approaches to Evaluation
1. Norm-referenced evaluation is one
wherein the performance of a student in a
test compared with the performance of the
other students who took the same
examination.
2. Criterion-referenced evaluation - an
approach to evaluation wherein a student’s
performance is compared against a
predetermined or agreed upon standard.
Basic Guidelines in Educational Assessment,
Measurement and Evaluation
The following are principles that serve as a
guide to educational assessment,
measurement and evaluation :
1. Teachers need to know how much they are
doing;
2. Students need to know how well they are
doing
3. Evidence, feedback and input data for
knowing how well the students and teachers
are doing should come from a variety of
sources;
4. Evaluation is a continuing process to check
on programs and modify/ adopt strategies to
promote desired behavior;
5. The procedures used for assessing student
learning must be compatible.
6. Evaluation is a reciprocal process . It involves
the evaluation of teacher performance, as
well as that of student achievement;
7. A teacher’s responsibility is to facilitate
student learning and is accountable for it.
