East West University


Preface

East West University is a private university located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was


established in 1996 by the Private University Act, 1992. Its own campus is
in Jahrul Islam City, Aftabnagar.
In 2007, Webometrics ranked EWU third among all universities of Bangladesh
(first among private universities in Bangladesh) and 64th in the Indian
subcontinent in their World Universities Ranking based on web visibility of
electronic publication, scientific results and international activities.
East West University has been ranked as the second private university in
Bangladesh in 2013 and is generally acknowledged as the premier private
university in Bangladesh.

History

The culture of private universities in Bangladesh started in the early 1990s. During
that period, the government started to feel that the existing public universities were
not sufficient to meet the demand for tertiary education in the country. Moreover,
to maintain their quality of education, most of the public universities in Bangladesh
kept themselves selective and as a result each year a large number of students
failed to get admitted into higher educational institutions.
These issues led the government to permit the establishment of private universities,
and on 9 August 1992, the Private University Act (Act 34) 1992 was passed.
East West University was established in 1996 as a non-profit organization. The
university is the first major project of the Progoti Foundation for Education and
Development (PFED), a non-profit, non-political, charitable organization
maintained by a group of academics, business leaders, professionals and education
enthusiasts led by Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, economist and former governor
of Bangladesh Bank.
BBA, BSc in Computer Science and BA in English at the previous campus at
45, Mohakhali Commercial Area, Dhaka. The university has 6000 students, in a
campus in Aftab Nagar near Banosri.
About this report

In this report we discussed about the facilities & problems for selecting the place &
build new campus of East West University at “Aftabnagar”. For preparing this
report we need to highlight some factors for choosing a new location for an
University campus. As the service organization, most dominant factors for
choosing location for EWU are as follows:
01.Proximity to customers: In terms of EWU, their new location is not
suitable for students, since the maximum students are living in different
residential area like as Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Bashundhara, Khilkhet etc.
Banasri (new residential poject) is situated beside EWU, which is a
positive side.
02.Transportation cost & proximity to markets: Since the maximum
students are living in different residential area like as Dhanmondi,
Gulshan, Bashundhara, Khilkhet, so their transportations & conveyance
cost is very high.
03.Transportation facility: Now a day’s Transportations is a big problem
for EWU. From different locations of Dhaka city, there is no direct bus to
go to EWU.
04.Locations of competitors: Since other top universities like as-
Northsouth University, Southeast University, Independent University &
United International University placed their permanent campus in the
Bashundhara, Uttara, Dhanmondi which is very good location, but
Aftabnagar is not good enough. EWU should follow “critical mass”.
05.Site specific factors: There are some site specific factors for Aftabnagar
like as Rampura Bridge bus stand, Hatirjheel project etc.

However Location is not less important also to new students for selecting
University.

following factors for choosing universities as follows & get the result as the
following.

buildings on a plot of about 8
bighas(2.23 acre) at Aftabnagar
nearBanasree and Bangladesh
Television. It has a floor space of
about 450,000 square feet.It is one of
the best campus among all the
private university.

With this above discussion New campus of EWU Provides the Students different
facilities which are not possible in previous campus.

Facilities & Services in New Campus:


Large Library
East West University has a large
library covering about 11000 sq ft.
in the new campus with maps and
journal area, and has a photocopy
corner, database search corner, and
newspaper display section. Each
day around 2,200 users visit this library. The library contains 21,700 copy books, a
subscription to 135 international and national journals (hardcopy), 3,300 online
journals on its database, subscription to 16 national daily newspapers and around
1,500 CD-ROMs and audio cassettes.

Laboratories
There are laboratories for engineering and science disciplines, and seven computer
laboratories with a local network of 533 PCs and personal VSAT services.
Universities laboratories are shared as follow:

 Computer Communications Laboratories, shared by all departments,


 Digital Systems Laboratory, shared by the engineering departments,
 Electronics Laboratory, shared by the engineering departments,.
 Electrical Circuits and Machine Laboratory, used by the EEE department,
 Network Laboratory, shared by department of CSE and APCE,
 Pharmacy Laboratory, used by department of Pharmacy,
 Physics Laboratory, used by all the science and engineering departments,
 Telecommunication Laboratory, used by the APCE department,
 VLSI Laboratory, shared by CSE and EEE departments,
 Software Engendering Laboratory, shared by only CSE and departments.

Playground
Playground plays a vital roles for every education institution. EWU new campus
provides the facility for this where as it was not possible in previous campus.
Theater Hall
For proper Entertainment EWU new campus provide some hall room for creating
theater by the students.

Conclusion
Finally we can conclude that EWU is renowned University it can overcome all the
problem arises from the location selection. It will be more easier when Aftabnagar
will be known as residential area fully. After evaluation of all the factors we can
say that Aftabnagar is a suitable location for EWU’s permanents campus.
