MecE370 Assignment 5

This document outlines three heat transfer problems for an assignment. Problem 1 involves determining the heat transfer rate and pressure drop for preheating air with hot water flowing through tubes. Problem 2 involves calculating the equilibrium temperature of the top surface of a train car absorbing solar radiation. Problem 3 requires determining the heat transfer rate from a plastic sheet to cooling air as it passes through a section. Students must show assumptions, include a schematic, and provide documented solutions for each problem. Presentation is also graded.

MecE 370 – Heat Transfer
Assignment No. 5
(3 Problems)
Due Wednesday 26th of March, 2008 @ 1pm
1. (20 Marks) Combustion air in a manufacturing facility is to be preheated before entering a furnace by
hot water at 90°C flowing through the tubes of a tube bank located in a duct. Air enters the duct at 15°C
and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 3.8 m/s, and flows over the tubes in normal direction. The outer
diameter of the tubes is 2.1 cm, and the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse
pitches of SL = ST = 5 cm. There are eight rows in the flow direction with eight tubes in each row.
Determine the rate of heat transfer per unit length of the tubes, and the pressure drop across the tube
bank.

2. (16 Marks) The top surface of the passenger car of a train moving at a velocity of 70 km/h is 2.8 m wide
and 8 m long. The top surface is absorbing solar radiation at a rate of 200 W/m2, and the temperature of
the ambient air is 30°C. Assuming the roof of the car to be perfectly insulated and the radiation heat
exchange with the surroundings to be small relative to convection, determine the equilibrium temperature
of the top surface of the car.

3. (14 Marks)
The forming section of a plastics plant puts out a
continuous sheet of plastic that is 1.2 m wide and 2
mm thick at a rate of 15 m/min. The temperature of the
plastic sheet is 90°C when it is exposed to the
surrounding air, and the sheet is subjected to air flow
at 30°C at a velocity of 3 m/s on both sides along its
surfaces normal to the direction of motion of the sheet.
The width of the air cooling section is such that a fixed
point on the plastic sheet passes through that section in
2 s. Determine the rate of heat transfer from the plastic
sheet to the air.

Notes:

• For each solution include assumptions, a schematic (1/4 to 1/3 of a page) and a documented solution

• (5 Marks) are allocated for presentation of the assignment
