Examination No. 1: Principles of Reinforced Concrete

This document contains instructions for a 4 problem examination on reinforced concrete design. It specifies that problems 1 and 2 make up the first exam, while problems 3 and 4 are the second exam. Each problem is worth 100 points and solutions must be presented clearly and on white paper. The problems cover topics like cracking moment, transformed section analysis, moment capacity, and beam design.

Principles of Reinforced Concrete

Instructions. Solve the following problems.

a. There are four problems in this examination. The four problems are divided
into two examinations to maximize the use of the problems. Problems 1 and
2 are considered in Examination No. 1, while Problems 3 and 4 are for
Examination No. 2.
b. Each of the Problem is 100 points.
c. Present your solution in chronological order and as legible as possible .
Disgruntled solution will not be corrected.
d. Use white bond paper in your solution.
e. Submit or turn-in your solution properly. Improper position of your solution
will not be corrected.
f. Please follow the instructions for your own good.

Examination No. 1

Problem No.1:

a. What is the cracking moment of the beam having a cross section shown in Figure 1
(a) if f ‘c = 28 MPa? All beam dimensions are in mm.
b. Determine is the value of W, see Figure 1 (b), which will cause the beam section in
Problem 1(a) to crack. Neglect the weight of the beam.

Problem No. 2:

a. If the beam in Figure 1 (a) have cracked, what is it safe moment capacity using
transformed section method if fc = 9.45 MPa, fs = 138 MPa , n = 9 and effective
cover of 60 mm? All beam dimensions are in mm.
b. Verify the flexural adequacy of the beam in Problem 2 (a) if it is to carry the given
loads shown in Figure 1(b) with W = 11.25kN..
Examination No. 2

Problem No. 3:

a. Determine the design moment capacity, ∅𝑀𝑛 , of the beam having a cross-section
shown in Figure 2 (a) using NSCP 2015 with f ‘c = 35 MPa, fy = 414 MPa, Es =
200000 MPa, 60mm steel covering. All beam dimensions are in mm.
b. If the beam in Figure 2 (a) will carry the loads shown in Figure 2 (b) , Find the safe
value of P (which is assumed ultimate) as required by flexure. Neglect the beam
weight,

Problem No. 4:

A single reinforced concrete beam will carry a uniform live load of 10 kN/m and uniform
dead load of 15 kN/m, (including its own weight) as shown in Figure 3. Using the following
design properties: f’c = 28 MPa, fy =415 MPa, clear cover 40 mm.
a. Design the concrete beam dimension, with b=2/3d , based on the maximum
bending moment:
(a.1) Using a minimum cross-section with maximum permissible reinforcement
ratio of 𝝆𝟎.𝟎𝟎𝟓 corresponding to net tensile strain ∈𝒕 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟓
(a.2) If deflection control with tension reinforcement index 𝐰 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟖.
b. Design the number of tensile reinforcement, 28-mm diameter, for the beam
dimension designed in part “(a.1)”:
(b.1 using reinforcement ratio of 𝝆𝟎.𝟎𝟎𝟓
(b.2 using the tension reinforcement index, 𝐰 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟖
(b.3) as required by the flexure or maximum bending moment.
