SOLID STATE DRIVES LABORATORY

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This laboratory course enables the learner to

 Impart knowledge on the model based control aspects of DC, AC and special machines using
power converters in MATLAB.
 Impart knowledge on hardware in loop(HIL) cosimulation in MATLAB
 Equip industry oriented learning

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

 Analyse the control strategy of electric drives using MATLAB Simulation


 Test the model based control of electric drives in Simulink
 Apply, analyse and design the speed control circuit for various types of motors like DC motor,
AC motors and universal motors.
 Design the automation systems for the Industrial drive
Expt. 1 SIMULATION OF SPEED CONTROL OF CONVERTER FED DC MOTOR
DRIVE

Aim: To simulate the single and three phase converters fed DC motor drive using
MATLAB SIMULINK

Procedure

1. Open the Simulink browser and create a new model.

2. Place the necessary components/ blocks by dragging from the Simulink tool box library
and place AC voltage source, thyristor, dc motor, current voltage measurement.

3. Connect the blocks as per the circuit diagram.

4. Run the simulation and observe the response.

Comment on the response.


Expt. 2 SIMULATION OF SPEED CONTROL OF VSI FED INDUCTION MOTOR
DRIVE

Aim: To simulate the VSI fed Induction motor drive using MATLAB SIMULINK

Simulation Circuit:

Procedure

1. Open the Simulink browser and create a new model.

2. Place the necessary components/ blocks by dragging from the tool box library.

3. Connect the blocks as per the circuit diagram.

4. Run the simulation and observe the response.

Comment on the response.


Expt. 3 SIMULATION OF SPEED CONTROL OF 1 PHASE MATRIX CONVERTER
FED INDUCTION MOTOR DRIVE

Aim: To simulate the 1 phase matrix converter fed Induction motor drive using
MATLAB SIMULINK

Procedure

1. Open the Simulink browser and create a new model.

2. Place the necessary components/ blocks by dragging from the tool box library.

3. Connect the blocks as per the circuit diagram.

4. Run the simulation and observe the response.

Ex. 5 SIMULATION OF SPEED CONTROL OF BRUSHLESS DC DRIVE

Aim: To simulate brushless dc drive to control the speed using MATLAB SIMULINK

Procedure

1. Open the Simulink browser and create a new model.

2. Place the necessary components/ blocks by dragging from the tool box library.

3. Connect the blocks as per the circuit diagram.

4. Run the simulation and observe the response.

Ex. 6 HIL COSIMULATION OF CHOPPER FED DC MOTOR DRIVE

Aim: To simulate HIL cosimulation of chopper fed DC motor drive using MATLAB
SIMULINK

Control Algorithm Simulink Blocks:

Procedure

1. Open the Simulink browser and create a new model.

2. Place the necessary components/ blocks by dragging from the Xilinx blockset library.

3. Connect the blocks as per the control circuit.

4. Run the simulation and observe the response.

Comment on the response.


Ex. 7 HIL COSIMULATION OF SWITCHED RELUCTANCE MOTOR DRIVE

Aim: To simulate HIL cosimulation of switched reluctance motor drive using MATLAB
SIMULINK
Control Algorithm Simulink Blocks:

Procedure

1. Download Embedded coder Add ons

2. Create a new model.

3. Place the necessary components/ blocks by dragging from the Embedded coder Simulink
support package library.

4. Connect the blocks as per the control algorithm

5. Run the simulation and observe the response.

Comment on the response.


Expt. 8 3 PHASE THYRISTORIZED DRIVE FOR DC MOTOR

Aim:

To study the performance of Converter fed DC drive with closed system.

Apparatus required:

1. 3 Phase SCR Module (PEC14HV5P-NW)


2. Micro2812 Controller
3. 5HP DC motor coupled DC generator.}
4. 34 Pin FRC Connector
5. Connecting Wires
6. Lamp Load

Connection diagram:
Procedure:

1. Ensure the Power of the Controller and SCR Module is OFF.


2. Connect the 34 pin FRC connector b/w SCR Module and controller.
3. Set the controller switch in Internal position (downside)
4. Connect 3 phase supply to the back side of the panel.
5. Connect the Power cable for both controller and module.
6. Patch the Free weeling diode with the circuit as shown in connection diagram.
7. Connect Ammeter ‘+’ve from cathode (K) of freewheeling diode, ‘-’ve terminal of the
ammeter to the +ve terminal of the Lamp load.
8. Connect the anode (A) of freewheeling diode to the –ve terminal of the lamp load
9. Connect the volt meter terminals across the lamp load.
10. Connect 3 Phase supply via auto transformer to the power module in R,Y,B terminals.
11. Connect F & FF terminals of the motor to the power module F & FF terminals.

Experimental Procedure:

1. Switch on the Power module and Controller.


2. Switch on the 3 Phase supply and Switch on the field supply.
3. The Controller Displays,

1. Open Loop
2. Closed Loop

4. Select open Loop


SET FIRING = 0
ACT SPEED = 0

5. Increase the 3 phase Variac from 0 V to 415V,


6. Vary the firing angle b/w 160 to 110 slowly by using increment and decrement
key in the controller, speed will vary from 0 Rpm to 1450 Rpm.
7. Take all the necessary readings and decrease the supply voltage to zero.
8. Now select closed loop, LCD will display

Set Speed: 0
Act Speed: 0

10. Vary the Set speed using increment and decrement key in the controller, run the motor
in required speed.

11. Loading can be done by varying rheostat given to the generator up to the armature
current reaches its rated value. Take all the necessary readings and decrease the supply
voltage to zero.

Expt. 9 CLOSED LOOP SPEED CONTROL OF CHOPPER FED DC DRIVE
Aim:
To study the performance of chopper fed DC drive using Spartan VI with
intelligent power module.

Apparatus required:

Connection diagram:
Procedure:

1. Ensure the Power of the Module and Controller is in OFF Position.

2. Connect the 34 pin latch cable from power module to controller module.

3. Connect the 24 pin latch cable to Tacho generator to the DC Motor.

4. Connect the single phase Variac input to power module R,Y.

5. Connect the Dc link (+Ve to -Ve) to the back side IPM power module.

6. Connect the external field supply with F & FF terminal of the generator.

7. Connect the rheostat across the Armature terminal of the generator.

5. Make the further connections as per the connection diagram given.

Experimental procedure:

1. Switch on the power module and controller module simultaneously.

2. Switch on the power module MCB.

3. Select controller module. Select Open loop

4. Gradually increase the Ac input supply using single phase Variac.

5. Increase the Duty cycle step by step all be down speed.

6. Externaly gives the field supply to the generator, ‘F’ and ‘FF’

7. Load the motor by varying the rheostat connected across the armature of the
generator upto the current reaches its rated value.

8. Take necessary readings, Finally reduce the load and reduce the Duty cycle
simultaneously,

10. Gradually reduce the single phase Variac to zero

11. Now Select Closed Loop, LCD displays

12. Vary the Set speed by using increment and decrement key in the controller.

13. Externaly gives the field supply to the generator, ‘F’ and ‘FF’

14. Load the motor by varying the rheostat connected across the armature of the

15. Take necessary readings, gradually reduce the supply voltage

16. Switch off the both power module / controller.

Expt. 10 EMBEDDED CONTROL OF SLIP RING INDUCTION MOTOR
USING STATIC KRAMER DRIVE

Aim:
To study the performance Slip Ring Induction Motor using DSP controller
with intelligent power module

Connection Procedure

1. Ensure the Power of the Module and Controller is in OFF Position.


2. Give 230V input supply to the module through power chord.
3. Give 3phase 440V AC input to the module through a 3phase isolation transformer
(optional).
4. Connect the 34 Pin FRC cable between Controller and Power Module.
5. Connect stator terminals of the slip ring induction motor ( R,Y,B ) to the R,Y,B of
Stator terminals in the module (motor terminals).
6. Connect the rotor terminals of the slip ring induction motor (U, V, W) to the U, V, W
of rotor terminals in the module (motor terminals).
7. Connect 3phase step down transformer primary terminals (star connected) to 3phase
supply.
8. Similarly connect the secondary terminals (star connected) of the transformer to
The (R, Y, B) secondary terminals of the module (transformer output)
9. Make the further connections as per the connection diagram given.

CONNECTION DIAGRAM

Experimental Procedure

1. Switch on the 3phase Ac power supply to the module.


2. Switch on the power ON/OFF switch on the module.
3. To connect the 34 pin latch cable between power module.
4. Now check for the phase sequence of the 3phase Ac input at the 3phase SCR
Bridge firing circuit test points (R, Y, B).
5. Switch on the firing module as well as power module.
6. Switch on the MCB both3 phase / Stator / Rotor sequently.
7. Select the Controller module.

8. Now increase the 3phase supply from 0V to 415V Now display shows

Act Speed : 0

9. Then increase the firing angle between 160 – 90 , now the speed will vary.
10. Run the motor in required speed, Take all the necessary readings.
11. Reduce the input supply gradually and select Closed Loop in the controller.
12. Now the Controller displays,

ACT SPEED: 0

13. Vary the set speed by using increment and decrement key, motor speed will change
respectively.
14. Externally gives the field supply to the generator, ‘F’ and ‘FF’
15. Load the motor by varying the load connected across the armature of the generator up
to the current reaches its rated value.
16. .Take necessary readings, gradually reduce the supply voltage
17. Switch off the both power module / controller.

Expt. 11 EMBEDDED CONTROL OF SWITCHED RELUCTANCE MOTOR
DRIVE

Aim

To study the open loop and closed loop speed control of SR Motor by using MATLAB and
SRM Power Module

Apparatus required:

Connection Procedure

1. Connect the Three phase supply through a transformer.


2. Connect the 34 pin cable from the Controller to SRM power module.
3. Connect the motor terminals A1, A2, B1, B2, A3, B3 to the A1, A2, B1, B2,
A3, B3 terminals in SRM power module.
Experimental Procedure:

1. Verify the connections as per the connection procedure and Wiring Diagram.

2. Switch ON the Micro Controller kit.

3. Power ON the SRM Power Module (PEC16DSM015-01).

4. Select Open Loop in the controller

5. Vary the duty cycle using increment and decrement key, run the motor in
required speed.

6. Now Select Closed Loop in the controller.

7. Vary the Set Speed using increment and decrement key, run the motor in
required speed.

Expt. 12 PLC BASED FOUR QUADRANT OPERATION OF 3 PHASE SQUIRREL
CAGE INDUCTION MOTOR DRIVE

Aim:

To study the PLC based three phase induction motor drive operated in four quadrant
mode.

Apparatus required:

Procedure:
1. Power up the drive unit and connect the AC drive with PC
2. Open the STARTER and download the program to drive unit
3. Enable Assume priority control and set the reference speed
4. Switch on the motor, the observe the speed response
5. Stop the motor and open ac dive unit 2 connect with PC and download the program
6. Repeat the procedure and observe the speed response
7. Switch on both the motor using start/stop button and run the motor at same speed, note
down the various parameters and tabulate it
8. Now reduce the speed of the ac drive 1, note down the parameters and tabulate it.
9. Plot the graph
