General Biology 1: Learning Activity Sheet: Cell Cycle

The document summarizes a biology learning activity sheet about the cell cycle. It includes three activities: 1) Identifying and describing the main stages of the cell cycle using an onion root diagram. 2) Discussing that cancer cells are difficult to treat because they reproduce rapidly. 3) Presenting the cell cycle creatively, with an example of a poetic presentation focusing on the organelles that allow the cell to function.

GENERAL BIOLOGY 1

NAME: ARIANETTE ATILAS GRADE LEVEL: G11 SECTION: STEM-A

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET:
Cell Cycle
ACTIVITY 1
Study the given picture of an onion root.
1. Identify the following stages in the cell cycle and give a brief description of each.
A. Cytokinesis. The cell divides into two daughter cells
B. Anaphase. Sister chromatids are pulled toward opposite poles
C. Metaphase. Chromosomes are lined up at the metaphase plate
D. Telophase. Chromosomes arrive at opposite poles and begin to decondense, nuclear envelope material
surrounds each set of chromosomes, mitotic spindle breaks down.
E. Prophase. Chromosomes condense and become visible; spindle fibers emerge from centrosomes; nuclear
envelope breaks down; nucleolus disappears.
2. Interphase. The cell is engaged in metabolic activity and performing its duty as part of a tissue. The DNA
duplicates during interphase to prepare for mitosis (the next four phases that lead up to and include nuclear
division). Chromosomes are not clearly discerned in the nucleus, which makes it not visible using a
microscope.

ACTIVITY 2: Cell Cycle and Cancer

1. What is the reason for having cancer cells?
 Mutation
2. Based from your readings, what do you think is the reason why cancer is difficult to treat?
 Cancer cells are difficult to treat because they reproduce rapidly.

ACTIVITY 3: Cell Cycle and Me

Present the cell cycle creatively. You may choose from the following options based from your interest. Be
guided also with the rubric given.
Verbal/linguistic:
Oh, cell
Oh, cell
How I love thee;
Your cell membrane holds me together whenever I feel
Like falling apart.
The mitochondria which you certain gives me the
Energy to go on.
My feelings are given to me by your Endoplasmic
Reticulum which is what
I love about you.
The most important thing which allows me to love you
Is your heart.
Your nucleus is the heart which I always love.
Oh, cell
Oh, cell
These are just a few reason why you are a major part of my life.
