The rubric evaluates concept maps on several performance indicators: concepts included and their arrangement, hierarchical structure, linkages between concepts, use of cross-links, and depth of coverage of the content. Higher levels are awarded for including more relevant concepts, clearer hierarchical structure, more accurate and varied linkages, use of cross-links to show complex relationships, and deeper understanding by extending the key ideas.
