1) The document describes a biology simulation where students examine the effect of UV light on bacterial survival and mutation rates. 2) Data shows that as UV exposure time increases, bacterial survival decreases on control plates while antibiotic resistance mutations increase on antibiotic plates. 3) UV radiation causes DNA damage through free radicals, which can lead to mutations and has implications for evolution and cancer development.

Mutation
You will use the mutation simulation on www.biologysimulations.com to determine the effect
of UV light on bacteria.
Hypothesis:
1. As UV exposure time increases bacterial survival will decrease.

2. As UV exposure time increases antibiotic resistance mutations will Increase.

Procedure: Click on the “Procedure” button to read the simulation procedure. Complete the lab
as shown in the procedure flow chart below and record your data.

5. How does your data compare to the class?

Though the data points differ, the trends of the graphs remain similar.
Discussion:
6. Based on your data, describe the impact of UV irradiation on bacterial survival.
As the duration of UV radiation increases, the bacterial survival reduces, leading to a sig-
nificant decrease in the bacterial population.

7. Based on your data, describe the impact of UV irradiation on bacterial mutation rates.
An increase in UV irradiation increases the bacterial mutation rates, causing a significant
distortion in the genetic material of the bacteria. The greater the duration of UV exposure, the
more the mutation will occur in bacteria.

8. Based on research, explain how UV radiation can cause mutations.

UV radiation causes the production of free radicals in the biological structures that then
combine oxidizes the genetic material of the organism and the DNA bases. Since the oxidized
DNA bases are now misshaped, they don't pair correctly during replication, leading to mutation.

9. Based on research, describe a role of mutations in evolution.

Mutation performs an essential role in evolution. The final origin of all genetic modifica-
tion and variations is mutation. The mutation causes the creation of new DNA sequences for
particular genes, forming new alleles, and ultimately changing the characteristics of an organ-
ism. Such continuous changes in characteristics lead to evolution.

10. Based on research, explain the connection between UV radiation and skin cancers in hu-
mans.
Ultraviolet radiation is an important contributing factor in the growth of skin cancers.
Ultraviolet radiation causes DNA mutations and deformation of DNA sequences leading to ge-
netic mutations. This consequently results in skin cancer. As the skin cells' DNA continues to
damage under UV radiation, the cancer cells form and develop.

Conclusion:
11. Write a brief conclusion of your results.
As the UV irradiation time increases, the DNA damage also increases in bacterial cells.
This makes it difficult for the cells to survive normally. The cells ultimately die and the popula-
tion of the bacterial colonies is reduced. Under UV radiation, the control plate colonies exhibit a
constant decrease in bacterial colonies, whereas, on the Antibiotic plate, a significant reduction
in population starts after 30 seconds of irradiation time.
