Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

Education plays a vital role in man’s life. It is through education that humans are able

to develop skills, learn crafts, and even access varied information. According to Smith (2015),

education pertains to “the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning and change

undertaken in the belief that we all should have the chance to share in life”. It can be deemed that

education is a necessity in order for men to transcend from their status.

Smith (2015) put an emphasis that education is to be shared with everyone. Therefore,

learning is a never-ending process as people continue to meet and encounter diverse individuals,

and new situations in life. An online article entitled “Education now vs. 20 years ago” shows that

education before relied solely on books and active interaction with one another in the classroom.

Not only teachers are taught what to be discussed, the system before focused on learning by

relying on the concepts the curriculum provided. Different from the present education system,

students are expected to explore and learn by themselves, hence, the teachers’ role is to be the

guide.

The availability of technology allowed opportunities to exist. In the field of education,

teachers make use of these as one of the tools in teaching. A blog entitled “Importance of

Technology in Education” tells that technology enables learning to be accessible even at home.

Technology is considered to be integral in how people live their lives. Education is also aided by

these changes as it offers chances for both teachers and students to access a variety of

information on the internet.

Due to the changes brought by technologies, education leveled up. Since technology is

present, the way teachers teach their students is also reliant on any of these. Hence, the arising

of different learning and teaching methods in education. One of the trends in the said field is

blended learning modalities. Using the available resources such as the internet and devices,

learning could transpire even in the comfort of homes.

The pandemic which began in 2020 has affected the way people live. Since movements

are controlled and are anchored to protocols, there have been limited movements in the past few

months. Education was not safe from these changes, thus, the education system of the

Philippines, resorted to blended learning modalities which, as defined by Hooks (2003), pertains

to any form of learning experience where the learner and instructor are physically separated. And

it also emphasized that blended learning modalities takes place anywhere and anytime.

Since the pandemic has greatly affected the way people live and move, people had no

other choice but to yield to what is called the “new normal”. The term ‘new normal’ speaks of

how lives should be lived in the present time. Knowing that education has been part of human

lives, amidst the pandemic, the only solution for it to continue is to adapt. Thus, the existence of

blended learning modalities.

Amadora (2020) in her online article entitled “Common Problems that Occur During

Online Classes” provided general examples of problems that people encounter during online

classes. Firstly, she mentioned the Internet connection. She entailed that not everyone can access

the internet connection as not everyone lives in rural areas. Aside from this, it was read in her

article the audio clarity, outdated device and software, and short attention span.
Similar to Amadora (2020), Magzambol (2020) and De la Rosa (2020) presented the

same scenario. In his article, he mentioned the changes that took place during the beginning of

the pandemic. De la Rosa (2020) on the other hand, mentioned the emotions that students and

teachers experience during the learning process. These articles exemplify the hardships both

teachers and students encounter as they delve themselves into learning.

An article entitled “Positive effects of the New Normal post Covid-19” stated that when

pandemic has happened, the new modality of learning has been accessible for all. It provides the

reasons why the new modality of learning aids in the education, such as more time to study and

the time to access the internet. The article also mentioned that the use of technology enables the

educators to efficiently teach amidst the pandemic.

There is a need to focus on this concern as both teachers and students are adapting and

are having time to cope with the new ways of learning. As learning is dependent on technology,

there could be problems about factors that can affect the student's performance in blended

learning modalities.

The researchers aim to gather data from the survey that will be fill out by the first year,

second year and third year students of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration (BSOA) in

Computer Communications Development Institute (CCDI) during the academic year 2020-2021.

Similarly, this study will provide a recommendation from the respondents that could help

educators to teach effectively and efficiently.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the factors affecting the blended learning of students during

this pandemic. Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profiles of the BSOA students, in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.3 Course/year

2. What are the learning modalities preferred by the BSOA students:

2.1 Online Real Time (Synchronous)

2.2 Online Not Real Time (Asynchronous)

2.3 Printed Module (Home Base Learning)

3. What are the factors affecting blended learning modalities of BSOA students along:

3.1 Financial

3.2 Intellectual

3.3 Emotional

4. What measures can be recommended in adapting new modality of learning?

Scope and Delimitation

The purpose of this study is to be of help in adapting the New Normal Learning.

Similarly, this endeavor will give teaching strategies that could assist instructors in educating
adequately and effectively. The study’s respondents will be the second year and third year

students of BSOA in CCDI during the academic year 2021-2022. The delimitation of this study

are the first year and fourth year students.

Significance of the Study

The study aims to provide students learning strategies to effectively learn in the new

modality of learning. It will also give teachers ideas to be efficient in teaching.

Specifically, this study will be beneficial to the following:

Students. This study will give them information on how to efficiently learn in the new setup. It

will also provide them strategies to continuously learn and to adapt the new learning scheme.

Teachers. This study will give them awareness and teaching strategies regarding the outcome of

blended learning modality.

relation to this matter of blended learning modality.

Computer Communication Developments Institute. The study will be significant to the

institute as the data will come from the students. This study will play a crucial role in the

development of learning and teaching strategies.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a resource material for future researchers whose

study is in connection with blended learning in a new modality.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter focus more on discussions and information of some perceptions about

distance learning that counteract of the student performance in their academics. Also, this

chapter presents the overview of previous works on related topics that provide the necessity

background for the purpose of this research.

Related Literature

Individuals at the present have their own strategy to cope in the now so-called Online

Class. An article entitled “23 Major Barriers to Education", Drew (2019) mentioned that poor

countries face many barriers to accessing an education. It also stated that many barriers can

possibly be encountered by students and performances will reflect how the students are being

active and perform better. The article also cited that teachers must understand that every student

has been influenced by this pandemic in terms of learning. Cai (2019) wrote an article entitled

"Age is Not a Barrier in Learning" which stated that “Age is no barrier. It is a limitation that you

put on your mind.” The author also included that many students are afraid to learn in school

because of the age gap. This literature related to the present study shows that there are many

barriers students encountered, as it is reflected on how the students perform better.

On the other hand, when performance is included, it is noted that gender is being

compared. In the article written by McDowell (2012) entitled “The Trouble With Men” Young

People, Gender Transformations and the Crisis of Masculinity”, the author argues that female

students have outperformed boys in education, especially at secondary and higher secondary
levels. He further explained that girls have secured good grades than boys at school,

college and even at university levels. It is also asserted that girls are constantly performing

better than boys in terms of educational achievement. This literature is related to the present

study considering that the performances are according in what gender the students prefer.

In an article written by Kathleen More, et al entitled “Age Is No Barrier: Predictors of

Academic Success in Old Learners”, the authors mentioned that that age, IQ, gender, working

memory, psychosocial factors, and common brain gene polymorphisms linked to brain function,

plasticity and degeneration did not influence academic performance. These findings demonstrate

that ageing does not impede academic achievement, and that discrete cognitive skills as well as

lifetime engagement in cognitively stimulating activities can promote academic success in older

adults. Aside from the mentioned article, “Is age a barrier to education and therefore social

change (n.d) proves that Alternative Learning System (ALS), free education program, provides

opportunity for dropouts to get a college degree. Some may think that age is a barrier to learning

but many believe that education is the learning not only for the young, able and for wealthy. This

literature is related to the present study considering that age does not affect the students’

performance.

The term 'wealthy' shows that one is capable of having an access to privilege. A review of

phenomenon combining the working while studying among students tells that many students are

being left with no choice but to enter corporate world to support their financial assistance in

studying (Sanchez-Gelabert, Et al., 2017). Sanchez et. Al (2017) said that when combining work

and study, it affects academic results. It only emphasized that not everyone can have access to

education, but rather how the student creates ways to maximize their time in working and in
studying. This literature is related to the present study considering that when combining work

and study, it affects academic result.

An article dated 2020 entitled "Effects of Poverty on Education During Distance

Learning" by Fowler affirmed that during Covid-19, many students were facing obstacles such as

family stability and homelessness, to obtain the education they deserve. Educators were

struggling to provide supplies they need to succeed. Low-income households often cannot afford

classroom supplies, and school budgets continue to learning. Lalani (2020) provides explanation

that online learning has also have a positive impact because it shown that online learning

increase retention of information. This literature is related to the present study considering that

education is not only for the young, and wealthy.

Some problems that students can also encounter include financial, mental and intellectual

stability. An article entitled "Effects of Poverty on Education during Distance Learning" Fowler

(2020) stated that the effects of poverty on education are numerous. Lack of access to technology

is just one reason students are struggling with Distance Learning. Mental status also indicated by

Mondal (n.d) in his article entitled "7 Important Factors that May Affect the Learning Process

tells that attitude falls under mental factors. Attitude is also important in the development of

personality. It plays a large part of an individual and Lastly Intellectual Factors by Mondal (n.d)

also said that Intellectual factors, the term refers to the individual mental level Psychology

reveals to use that an individual possess different kinds to intelligence. This literature is related

to the present study considering that mental health can also consider one of the factors that affect

student’s performance.
Before the pandemic, the traditional and normal way of learning is through going to

schools or universities and by having face to face interaction with teachers. However, when the

pandemic came, students are obliged to adjust and gain knowledge though the Blended Learning.

Wong (2020) stated that because of asynchronous way of learning, most of the students became

lazy and are not coping the same as before. Bresnick (2020) in his article entitled “7 Ways

Students Can Maintain Good Study Habits During COVID-19” provided tips to improve learning

from home. Triffany (2018) supported the idea of Wong (2020) but added not to stress the self

when studying. The start of the school year brings new uncertainties and learning formats,

including hybrid structures that combine distance learning (Thibodeau and Rapport, 2020). This

literature is related to the present study considering that students are needed to adjust and gain

knowledge through the new modality.

The article written by Muilenburg and Berge (2005) emphasized the changes brought by

the pandemic and its enormous impact not only in the way of living but also the academic field.

Many articles give certain opinions about the experiences that student encountered nowadays.

The article written by Thibodeau and Rapport in 2020 entitled “Helping Students Cope with

Change and Disruption” provided some answers that some may relate to such as being realistic

and create ways to cope with the abrupt changes brought by the pandemic. This literature is

related to the present study that will provide some answers and create ways to cope w/ the abrupt

changes brought by the pandemic.

Related Studies

Education is a democratizing power that helps in preparing students to participate

actively in all aspects of their life. And also, it is the key component that brings growth and
progress into society. According to Nelson Mandela “Education is the most powerful weapon

which you can use to change the world". It means that education is the key to be succeeded so

that's why people need to be educated. The Education is also referring to the knowledge received

through schooling or instruction and to the institution of teaching as a whole. It says that

innovation in learning is the need of today's world. Sample of this is the demographic profile of

the students in terms of academic characteristic such as age, and gender.

In blended learning new modalities the new set-up utilized by institutions to cope with the

changes brought by the pandemic. This new modalities was divided into a triad: the synchronous,

asynchronous and printed module. Synchronous learning environments provide real time

interaction, which can be collaborative in nature incorporating e-etivities (Salmon, 2013) such as

an instructor’s lecture with a facility of questions-answer session. However, a synchronous

session requires simultaneous student-teacher presence. On the other hand, asynchronous

environments are not time bound and students can work on e-tivities on their own pace (Perveen,

2016). According to Malaya, 2020 the printed module or the modular distance learning is an

individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning modules in print or digital

format/electronic copy, whichever is applicable to the learner. Learners under Modular Distance
Learning can also use other resources such as Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity sheets,

study guides, and other study materials.

The external factors which may affect the learning process of the students in the midst of

pandemic are the financial factor, intellectual factor, emotional factor and physical factor.

First, financial factors are the family's social economic status which can play even more

important roles in student’s academic achievement than schools and communities. Because of

the limitation of family resources, parents of poor families usually are not able to invest

sufficiently in their children’s education, which affects their children’s academic achievement to

their study. The second factor, which is intellectual, refers to an individual’s mental level which

can also affect the student’s learning. For example, some people have easier time remembering

information than others. Some students can readily understand abstract concepts, while others

need concrete examples. Lastly is the emotional factor of the students. According to Goetz et al.

(2003), there are three reasons for exploring emotions in education: their impact on learning

quality, students’ well-being (physical and mental state) and their role in socialization (peers and

teachers). It is believed that emotions affect the internal motivation of students to learn based on

interest and curiosity in learning as well as their external motivation associated with the

achievement of positive results or to prevent negative consequences.

The relevance of this study shows that there are some factors that can affect the

learnings of the students.

Synthesis of the state of the art

The researchers presented various related literature and studies regarding the study. To

have a clearer understanding of these literature and studies, the researchers made a synthesis in

the succeeding discussion.

Based on the related literature and studies mentioned above, the researchers present that there are

barriers that the students encounter amidst these times of pandemic. Also, the demographic

profiles of the students in terms of age, gender and their financial, intellectual and emotional

status or stability are some factors that affect the blending learning, which equivalently affects

their preference of the type of learning modality.

Gap to be bridged

The previous studies mentioned focused on the demographic profiles and how it plays

important role in the field of education. Similarly, the previous studies centralized on the concept

of the factors affecting blended learning of students in new modality. Knowing that learning used

to take place in the classroom, the new means of learning could pose a problem in the learning

process of the students.

The gap to be bridged by the study is that it will determine the factors that affect blended

learning in new modalities of students. And attempt to provide necessary recommendations that

the respondents could give to help the said group in the new learning set-up. As the outbreak of

COVID 19 has forced many institutions switch their teaching mode to blended learning
modalities instead of face to face teaching, it is the vital for the institutions to understand what

factors might impact the satisfaction of students and further their intention to learn more. But

blended learning new modalities can be an effectively that shutting them out to have opportunity

to connect with their teachers, engage and participate also as a lifelong student.

At the end of this study, the researchers will find out the factors affecting the preference

on the type of blending learning modality in coping with online learning of the first year, second

and third year BS Office Administration students of CCDI. By the use of the survey

questionnaire that the researchers will be using, this will make a gap-bridge to the present study.

Theoretical Framework

The theories used in the present study are Schema Theory, Social Learning Theory, and

Self-Efficacy Theory. Schema Theory implies that prior knowledge plays a significant role in

learning as it helps in reinforcing information before delving into a new level of knowledge.

Albert Bandura created Social Learning Theory and Self-efficacy theory; however, both theories

are used in different means as Social Learning Theory entails that learning must take place when

one is learning through observation and imitation. Self-efficacy theory, on the other hand,

explains that one’s perception of itself determines success. These theories will be utilized to aid

students to achieve a good performance at school. It also examines how social environment

affects motivation, attitudes, teaching, and learning. On the other hand, it gives the learner's

meaningful experiences in everyday life that can lead to change an individual’s knowledge. The

students will be able to begin to understand the processes of learning, their beliefs about

learning, and challenge the assumptions around the methods and methodologies of learning.
Over all theories have a vital role in the students’ life as they grow and elevate to a New Year

level.

METHODOLOGY AND DESIGN

This chapter incorporates the research design, the sources of data, the gathering

procedure, and the instrumentation that will help in accomplishing the study.

Methodology

This study is a quantitative study research that aims to identify the demographic profile of

the respondents, preferred modalities learning by the respondents, what factors affecting blended

learning of students, to the new normal set-up in their education to provide the appropriate

suggestion and recommendation that could serve as an aid in the learning process.

The research method will be the descriptive method. This method will aim to accurately

and systematically describe a population, situation or phenomenon. It can answer what, where,

when and how questions but not why questions. The goal of descriptive research is to describe a

phenomenon and its characteristics. This research is more concerned with what rather than how

or why something has happened. Therefore, observation and survey tools are often used to gather

data.

Sources of Data

The primary sources of data are the first year, second year and third year students of BS

in Office Administration in CCDI. The secondary sources will be taken from published research

papers and books. Also, the researchers will gather the information from the internet, articles and

journals that can be a reference of the researcher paper.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step before going to the testing proper is to make a request letter. Upon approval,

the researchers retrieved the request letter, in administered the questionnaire. The researchers

used the time allotted of the students in getting their module to avoid disruption of online class.

The copies of questionnaire were distributed to 5 students. Before they answered the questions,

the instruction was given first to Fourth year BSOA students in order to ensure that the students

could understand the directions. After the data gathering, the researchers collected the

questionnaire. The result were tallied and the appropriate statistical treatment was applied.

Instrument

The research instrument that will be used is a self-made questionnaire to gather the

needed data for the students’ profile. The draft of the questionnaire was drawn up-out

accordingly on the researcher’s designing of good data collection instrument were considered.

For instance, statement describing the situations was toned down to accommodate the knowledge

preparedness of the respondents. In this way, the instrument presumed that the responses of the

students were valid. The instrument was validated and tried out to 5 students in 4th year level

before the copies were distributed to the identified respondents of the researchers.

experiencing difficulties when it comes to financial factor such as family income and budget to

pay for the internet. Parents provide the devices that is needed. Enough budget for the expenses

in blended learning and finding alternative ways to overcome with these factors. These factors

indicate that financial is one of the factors affecting blended learning modalities of the students

in terms of academic expenses.

In terms of intellectual factor, the majority of students answered sometimes. The students

encountered difficulties in answering modules even without the actual discussion in classroom.

Answering the module through self-learning comprehension efficiently and exerting effort to

study hard. Answering the modules honestly and submitting modules on time to the instructor.

These factors indicate that Intellectual is one of the factors affecting blended learning modalities

when it comes to academic performances.

As for emotional factors, most of the students answered sometimes. It shows that students

experiencing stressful in answering modules. Students are comfortable when studying through

blended learning makes it easier. Google meeting makes the students comfortable in learning and

emotionally fit to cope up with the stresses that the students feel. These factors indicate that
emotional is one of the factors affecting blended learning modalities when it comes to emotional

difficulties.

Recommended Measures in Adapting New Modality of Learning

The following recommendation are based from the data gathered.

a. Students need to feel they are engaging in human-to-human interactions that will allow

Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECCOMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the research findings, conclusion and

recommendation based from the research findings that is being collected by the researchers.

Summary
The main purpose of this study was to determine what factors affecting blended learning

modalities of students. Specifically, it answered the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profiles of the students?

a. Age

b. Gender

c. Course

2. What are the learning modalities preferred by the students?

a. Online Real Time (Synchronous)

b. Online Not Real Time (Asynchronous)

c. Printed Module (Home Based Learning)

3. What are the factors affecting blended learning modalities of BSOA students along:

a. Financial

b. Intellectual

c. Emotional

4. What measures can be recommended in adapting new modality of learning?

Findings

The findings of the study were presented on the bases of the data that is being gathered

from the respondents.

1. Demographic profile of the students.

a. Age. The findings in this study reveals that age does not hinder to a person who attain his
objectives when it comes to education.
b. Gender. The findings in this study revealed that most of the respondents are female enrolled

in this course.

c. Course. Findings revealed that most of the respondent are BSOA 3 with an average of 40%

followed by BSOA 2 with an average of 26.6%. Over all there are 57 respondents answered the

survey questionnaire.

2. Learning modalities is preferred by the students.

a. Synchronous - It shows that percent of 57 respondents chose online real time.

b. Asynchronous - It shows that percent of 57 respondents chose online not real time.

c. Printed Module - It shows that percent of 57 respondents chose home based learning.

3. Factors affecting blended learning modalities of the students.

The findings of this study shows that financial, intellectual and emotional factors can affects

blended learning modalities of BSOA students. Most of the students answered sometimes. The

study shows that students were experiencing difficulties when it comes to financial factor in

providing school expenses. On the other hand, students encountered difficulties in answering

modules when it comes to academic performances because of intellectual factor. And in terms of

emotional factor the majority of the students answered sometimes when it comes to emotional

difficulties.

4. Recommended measures in adapting new modality of learning.

a. Students need to feel that they are engaging in human-to-human interactions that will

allow them to cultivate their professional as well as personal relations.

b. Students must work independently through class participation to collaborate learning

activities and this opportunities are important to students learning experiences.

Conclusion

In this pandemic crisis the Philippines and the whole world is going through right now,

there is no doubt that e-learning and blended learning will be the new normal in the Philippine

educational system. It is now just a matter of planning on how it will be implemented depending

in the need of the students. Real time and self-paced online classes which are also called

synchronous and asynchronous respectively are to be considered right now which was supported

by the current theories seeing two basic types of teaching which can be combined in blended

learning – a synchronous and asynchronous teaching.

With the analysis of the data gathered from the 40 BS Office Administration students of

CCDI, the following conclusion where found:

1. Age or gender doesn’t affect the choice of a student in the kind of blending learning

modality he/she prefers in learning.

2. Most of the BSOA 2nd to 3rd year students who are around 18-20 years old are female

because the course itself offers office work which is flexible to females.

3. The learning modality preferred by the students is asynchronous, because it’s

advantageous. Respondents can easily learn, access information and attend classes

anytime and anywhere.

4. Students have mixed insights regarding the shift to online learning amidst the
5. pandemic. The sudden move to online mode of education affected students’ perception
on
6. their learning process, both on positive and negative notes. Overall, students perceived
7. online classes to be effective in ensuring continuity of learning despite the pandemic.
8. Connectivity, financial and mental issues are some of the disadvantages following the
9. transition to online mode of learning. Students’ mental, emotional and social aspects
were
10. found to be critical in their learning process, which are often overlooked in the design
and
11. implementation of online classes. The immediate shift to online classes due to the
pandemic
12. has left many students struggling to catch up on their studies. Meanwhile, self-
regulation,
13. flexibility and learning continuity are among the advantages of the online set-up. Online
14. learning induced improvements to students’ learning comprehension and self-regulation.
15. Solutions to issues associated to the current educational set-up resulting from the
pandemic
16. are already available and it will be just a matter for educators and school administrators
to
17. carry out strategies that best apply to their institutions. Improvements in the
implementation
18. of online classes through adequate planning of activities and deadlines, as well more
19. synchronous sessions and provision to help improve access and connectivity are
suggested.
20. The mental and emotional states of students must be considered in the design and
21. implementation of any learning strategy online.
