Experiment (2)

Simplification of Boolean Functions and Implementation by Universal

Gates

Main Goals
1-Demonstrates the relationship between a Boolean function and the
corresponding logic diagram.

2- Apply simplification procedures to reduce the number of gates and possible

the number of ICs.

3-Implementing the basic logical gates and a simple combinational circuit using
universal gates.

Exercise 2-1
Simplification of Boolean functions
This experiment demonstrates the relationship between a Boolean function and the
corresponding logic diagram. The Boolean functions are simplified by using the map
method then the logic diagrams are to be drawn using NAND gates.
Logic diagram. This part of the experiment starts with a given logic diagram from
which we proceed to apply simplification procedures to reduce the number of gates and
possible the number of ICs.
Ex 2.1.1
The logic diagram shown in figure 1 require two ICs 7400, and 7410 . Assign pin
numbers to all input and output of the gates and connect the circuit with the X, Y, And
Z inputs going to three switches and the output F to an indicator lamp. Derive the truth
table of the circuit as in table 1.
Obtain the Boolean function of the circuit and simplify it using the map method.
Construct the simplified circuit and Derive its truth table as in table 2. Show that for

each of the eight possible inputs combinations, the two circuits have identical outputs
.this will prove that the simplified circuit behaves exactly as the original circuit
-the Boolean function of (F) in figure 1 before simplification is

F=……………………………………….
- The Boolean function of (F) in figure 1 after simplification is

F=……………………………………….

F1(A,B,C,D) = (0,1,4,5,8,9,10,12,13)
F2(A,B,C,D) = (3,5,7,8,10,11,13,15)

Simplify the two functions by means of maps. Obtain a composite logic
diagram with four inputs A, B, C , D and two outputs , F1, F2. Implement
the two functions together using a minimum number of NAND ICs. Do not
duplicate the same gate if the corresponding term is needed for both
functions. Connect the circuit and check its operation by Derive it’s truth
table according the table 2. The truth table for F1 and F2 obtained from the
circuit should conform with the minterms listed

Exercise 2-2
Universal Gates
NAND gates and NOR gates are called universal gates or universal building
blocks,
as any type of gates or logic functions can be implemented by these gates.

Tasks:
1- Universal NAND Gate
Using a single 7400 IC, connect a circuit that produces
a. an inverter
b. a 2-input AND
c. a 2-input OR

Lab Experiments 2nd Year Electric

d. a 2-input NOR
e. a 2-input XOR

In each case, verify your circuit by checking its truth table.

2- Universal NOR Gate

Using a single 7402 IC, connect a circuit that produces
a. an inverter
b. a 2-input AND
c. a 2-input OR
d. a 2-input NAND
e. a 2-input XOR

In each case, verify your circuit by checking its truth table.

3- NAND Circuit
Using a single 7400 IC, construct a circuit with NAND gates that implements
the Boolean function

F = AB + CD

1. Draw the circuit diagram.

2. Obtain the truth table for F as a function of the four inputs.
3. Connect the circuit and verify the truth table.
4. Record the patterns of l’s and 0’s for F as inputs A, B, C, and D go
from binary 0 to binary 15.

Hint

1.Make sure that Vcc, are connected in right way and have a common
ground for each ICs and connect in the right pins.
2.Check the configuration of each IC by using the function for each pin
in the IC using IC's datasheet.
3.Check the fabrication of each IC to know power dissipation and the
maximum number of loaded ICs.
4.Each wire used in connection in experiment must be securely connected
and does not get crossed with other wires.
5.Make sure no short circuits occur between any two pins.
6.Check the direction and the arrangements of pins in ICs before starting
connecting the experiment.
7.The amplitude of the input/output signal must be kept in TTL range;
otherwise LEDs will not show any results.
8. a binary input 15 into the 7446 blanks all seven segments.
