10.2 Working With Geometric Series: Notes

1. A geometric series is a series where each term is obtained by multiplying the previous term by a common ratio r. 2. The nth term of a geometric series with first term a and ratio r is given by arn-1. 3. A geometric series converges when the absolute value of the common ratio r is less than 1, and the sum is equal to the first term divided by 1 - r.

Recall: What is a geometric sequence?
A geometric sequence is one in which the same number is multiplied to each term to get the next
term in the sequence. The number you multiply by is called the common ratio, usually denoted by 𝒓.

nth Term of a Geometric Sequence
The nth term of a geometric sequence with first term 𝑎 and common ratio 𝑟 is given by:

𝑎 𝑎 𝑟    or 𝑎 𝑎 𝑟    or 𝑎 𝑎 𝑟
