Callista Roy, Creator of the Adaptation Model of Nursing

Nursing theories are the foundation of nursing and provide a framework for nurses to care

for patients. The Callister Roy Adaptation theory of nursing has illustrated its importance in

nursing practice. This theory links health to the person, environment, and the nurse’s role

(Rosinczuk et al., 2015). Furthermore, the theory describes a person as a system, thus

emphasizing the need for making this system a whole. This theory is important because it

provides a framework that guides the nursing assessment and care of the patient (Gonzalo, A.

2021). Furthermore, the author further states that with the help of guided outlines in this theory,

the nurse can fully understand the patient’s problem. It enables the nurse to link a patient’s

behavior to various stimuli and how the nurse can promote the patient’s adaptation in all

dimensions to enhance healing.

Application of the Theory in Patient Care.

Callister Roy’s theory is used to provide holistic care to the patient. Using the model, the

nurse assesses the multidimensional aspects of the patient’s life and uses the nursing process to

plan for care (Rosinczuk et al., 2015). According to the authors, the adaptation theory is used to

prepare patients with life-limiting illnesses to cope with the effects induced by the illness. In the

care of patients, the adaptation model is used to gather the client’s history and assess the various

physiologic modes of the patient and in the plan of patient care using the nursing process

(Jennings, 2017). According to Rosinczuk et al. (2015), nurses use the adaptation model to assess

a patient’s behavior, external or internal stimuli, role function, self-concept, and support system

and incorporate these in the patient’s care plan to promote adaptation. Nurses use the adaptation

model in addressing all the dimensions of a patient's holistic wellbeing.
