Learning Episode 9 - Preparing For Teaching and Learning

The document discusses principles of teaching and learning. It provides examples of how teachers can apply principles like setting clear expectations, promoting active learning, helping students find personal meaning and relevance, and encouraging cooperation. The most important principle is said to be learning as an active process, as it engages students and uses a student-centered approach. SMART objectives are analyzed as helping focus lessons by making goals clear, measurable, achievable, reasonable and timely. Inductive and deductive teaching methods are also distinguished, and a student-centered approach is preferred for reteaching observed classes.

Learning Episode 9 - Preparing for Teaching and Learning

Activity 9.1 Demonstrating an Understanding of Research-

Based Knowledge Principles of Teaching and
Learning

School: Campoyong Elementary School__________________

Grade/Year Level: ___V___ Date: _______________

ANALYZE

Give instances where this/these principle/s could have been applied?

Effective learning begins with the setting of clear and high

expectations of learning outcomes. Example: Before the teacher begins
teaching her lesson to the students, she can use a projector to show the
students her planned learning outcomes for the topics so that they can have a
sense of what the discussions would be like and how they can respond to the
teacher.

Learning is an active process. Example: Teachers can use reciprocal

questions to teach this principle of learning. This technique promotes an open
discourse in which students assume the position of instructor and formulate
their own questions concerning the topic, reading session, or lesson.

Learning is the discovery of personal meaning and relevance of ideas.

Example: In order to allow pupils to aid with their responses, the teacher
answered those test questions verbally in front of them. For example, the
students acknowledged the need of self-preparation prior to an exam.

Learning is a cooperative and a collaborative process. Learning is an

enhance in an atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration. Example:
Collaborative learning is a teaching and learning strategy in which students
work together to answer a pressing question or complete a meaningful
activity. Collaborative learning can take the form of a group of students
debating a lecture or students from different schools working together on a
shared assignment over the Internet.

From among the principles of learning, which one do you think is the most
important?

Principles of learning are guidelines for the ways in which people
learn most effectively. "Learning is an active process," I believe, is the most
significant principle since it harnesses student engagement to teach. It uses a
student-centered approach to enable pupils to actively participate in the
learning process. Students are supposed to learn through cooperation and
exploration rather than protracted teacher talks and lectures, as conventional
learning relied on long teacher discussions and lectures. With this kind of
approach, the student's task is to collaborate with the teacher in the building
of knowledge, and the teacher's responsibility is to assist them. As a result of
allowing pupils to participate in the building of information, better
understanding, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills are developed.

Activity 9.2 Identifying Learning Outcomes that are Aligned

with Learning Competencies

ANALYZE
1. Do SMART objectives make the lesson more focused?
In my own opinion, SMART objectives help to focus the lesson since
they set you up for success by making goals clear, measurable, achievable,
reasonable, and timely. Teachers are aided in achieving their desired learning
outcomes as a result of this. The SMART methods will assist teachers in pushing
themselves farther, providing them with a sense of direction and assisting them in
organizing and achieving their goals in order to achieve what they anticipate from
their students.

REFLECT

Reflect on the
Lessons learned in determining SMART
learning outcomes.
I learned from the SMART learning outcomes lesson that your lesson
objectives or intended learning outcomes should be SMART (Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Result-oriented, and Time bound) because this will
really help the teacher as well as guide the teacher in the learning process
and the development of the students. SMART objectives will also assist
teachers in directing the flow of the session and assisting them in achieving

their desired goals on a particular topic, as well as making the conversation
clear and organized.

Activity 9.3 Distinguishing Between Inductive and Deductive

Methods of Teaching

ANALYZE
1. What are the possible consequences of teaching purely subject matter for
mastery and for the rest?
When a teacher focuses solely on subject matter for mastery and
testing, the student's knowledge will be limited since the instructor restricts the
student's learning to a concept with no applicability. Also, if this occurs, I
believe that pupils will study solely for the sake of exams, and everything the
teacher has taught will be easily forgotten.

2. If you were to reteach the classes you observed, would you be teacher-
centered or student-centered? Why?
If I were to teach the class again, I would continue to adopt a student-
centered approach in which I urge students to participate actively but they are
the ones who facilitate. I'll steer them in the right direction and correct them if
they make mistakes.

REFLECT

Reflect on Principles of teaching worth applying

As a future educator, I believe that teaching concepts are critical for

us all to develop ourselves and our students' learning processes. This
encourages high-quality learning and teaching practices at a variety of
institutions dedicated to education. All of these ideas are addressed in a way
that encourages students to participate and learn through effective instruction.
