2021-2022
Course Objectives: This course reviews and extends the concepts of Algebra II while
introducing students to new topics like trigonometry. It will follow the Diocesan Course of
Study and is aligned to the State of Ohio Academic Content Standards. This course is meant to
prepare students for a freshman level math course at the college level.
Quarter 2 Quarter 4
Quadratic functions Trigonometric Identities/Equations
Families of Functions Exponential/Logarithmic Functions
Polynomial and rational functions Functions Review (Time permitting)
Course Format: A variety of techniques will be utilized throughout the year. There will be a
mixture of lecture, collaborative group work, computer assessments, and hands-on applications
of the material being covered. Students will be encouraged to think critically about the math
they are learning as well as do computations with and without a calculator. Just about every
class will conclude with a Ticket out of Class (TOOC). These will be used to monitor students’
progress in learning the material and concepts being presented during the week. Different forms
of technology will be utilized throughout the year including laptop computers, graphing
calculators, and dynamic geometric software.
Guidelines:
1. Be Respectful- Treat all students, teachers, and property with respect. Follow all
guidelines in the school handbook. Any classroom interruptions that inhibit learning or
teaching will not be tolerated. This includes being out of your seat during class, talking
during instruction or while someone else is talking, and taking property that is not yours
without permission.
a. Do not work on assignments from other classes during math class. The teacher
will confiscate any work from other classes and these may not be returned.
b. All purses, backpacks or other personal belongings must be kept under the
student’s desk during class.
c. Do not bring cell phones, iPods, etc. to class. The teacher will confiscate any of
these items and disciplinary action will follow.
d. Appropriate use of computers is encouraged. The computers may be used for
note taking and class participation purposes only. Using the internet for non-class
related purpose or playing games during class can result in the loss of the
privilege to use the computer during class time. Violations will be handled in
accordance with the school handbook. During non-Power School tests and
quizzes, the devices must remain closed.
2. Be Responsible- Do not make excuses or blame others for personal mistakes. Take
responsibility for your learning and take pride in a job well done. Learn to use this time
wisely. If you are struggling with the material or do no understand something, ASK
FOR HELP. I am more than happy to meet with students who seek additional help
outside of class. Teacher availability before and after school will be posted each week.
There is also math tutoring available in study hall.
3. Be Prepared- Always come to class ON TIME. You need to be in your seat and ready to
go with all materials out when the bell rings. Always bring a pencil, paper, calculator,
computer, math binder, and any homework assignments. Yes, I expect you to have ALL
of these every day.
a. Use the restroom or go to the nurse’s office on your time, not during class.
Students generally will not be allowed leave the room once class has started.
b. A student will only be allowed to leave class to go to the nurse’s office in the
event he or she is ill and is planning on going home for the day. All medication
and other needs should be taken care of between classes.
This class conforms to the policies of the School Handbook in all areas including, but not
limited to, the Honor Code and Absence Policy. Violations will be handled in accordance
with the handbook.
The number of absences and tardies will be monitored, especially absences on test/quiz days.
Please note:
If a student is absent the day before a assessment is to be given, he or she is still
responsible for taking the assessment on testing day. If a student is absent the day of the
assessment, he or she MUST make-up the assessment the first day back. If a student is absent
during the class period the day of a test but present for any other part of the day, he or she is
required to see the teacher to make arrangements to make up the test THAT DAY. Students
who display a noticeable pattern of being absent the day before and/or the day of a test or quiz
may also face penalties of partial or no credit for assessments. The school handbook policy for
absences on test days will be strictly enforced. Assessment make-up are given before school,
after school, or study hall.
Unless medically quarantined, students must turn in a hard copy of homework assignments. If a
student in medically quarantined, an electronic copy should be submitted as pdf files through the
appropriate Power School location and include the student’s name in file name. Assignments
emailed to the teacher will not be accepted. In the event of a technological issue with Power
School or the tablet causing a late assignment, the teacher will work with the student to arrive at
a fair resolution as deemed by the teacher
2. Pop Quizzes (5-10 points each): (never announced) These will be short assessments to see if
students are doing required work.
3. Quizzes (25-50 points each): (always announced) These will be longer assessments and there
will be one or two during each chapter.
4. Tests (80-100 points each): Given at the conclusion of each chapter. The day before the test
will be a review day and a review packet with answer key will be provided to help students
prepare for the test. If a student is absent for a test, he/she will make arrangements with the
teacher to make-up the test. The student will have the same number of days to make-up the test
as he/she was absent.
5. Notebook Check (50 points): Given at the conclusion of the 1st , 2nd, and 3rd grading periods
to see if students are keeping work organized. A checklist will be handed out prior to notebooks
being collected to help students organize material.
6. TOOC/Participation (5 points each week) Students will receive one problem each day at the
end of class and receive one point each day (5 for the week) for attempting the problem.
Students can lose this point for not attempting the problem, not being prepared for class (missing
pencil, calculator, etc.), misuse of computer, or any other behavior that demonstrated a lack of
engagement during class.
Every effort will be made to ensure that the grade on Power School reflects a student’s
current standing in class. Students and parents should make a habit of checking Power
School daily for grades, updates, and announcements for upcoming tests and quizzes.
Materials: (bring to class daily, failure to do so can result in loss of participation points)

Paper (paper must have a clean edge. Pages torn out from a notebook will not be accepted)
3 ring binder with 4 or 5 dividers
