Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (MCED)


Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (MCED) is involved in Entrepreneurship
Development activities all over Maharashtra since 1988. Main objective of MCED is to provide
entrepreneur development trainings and assist them in identification of suitable loans,
establishment of the enterprise, obtaining necessary permissions etc. MCED also provides help
in overcoming various managerial, financial, operational problems faced during functioning of
the enterprise. For efficient decision making, information sharing, and providing a platform for
interaction amongst its trainees a web portal has been developed for various services offered by
MCED. The portal contains complete details about MCED, the information about the
Publications, details of the courses that will be conducted at various locations, feedbacks and
queries from the participants.

Vision and Mission of MCED:


MCED is a training institute in the core area of entrepreneurship development. It works as a
facilitator and guide for the creation and cultivation of the entrepreneurial spirit and the concept
of employment. At MCED, there is always the humble buzz of people discussing, brainstorming,
making plans and revamping shelved ideas. MCED is also an incredibly technology savvy
organization which is amongst the few offices to enforce the paperless office concept. We can
crystallize following objectives of MCED:
• To promote entrepreneurship in the backward region of Maharashtra State.
• To organize lectures, discussions, exhibitions and training programs to promote
entrepreneurship.
• To promote entrepreneurship among the young graduate, women, scheduled caste, scheduled
tribes and minorities.
• To organize Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs) in the rural areas to search
latent entrepreneurship qualities of young men

Activities and Programmes carried out by MCED:


The MCED acts as a compound for entrepreneurship development by creating an environment
for entrepreneurship in the support system, developing new entrepreneurship, helping in the
growth of existing entrepreneurs and proliferation of entrepreneurial education. The following
activities were conducted by MCED:
1. Provides basic study training.
2. Training of submission of the proposal to the sponsoring agency.
3. Programme announcement in local newspapers and Radio, TV etc.
4. Meeting with local bodies’ corporation and agencies, DIC officials / local associations.
5. Banks for assistance in identification of the participants /identification of faculty / guest
faculty for EDPs.
6. Visits to various organizations by course coordinator.
7. Programme publicity through supporting of organizations.
8. Circular / letters to various organizations.
The purpose of identifying industrial opportunities in advance was to help the EDP participants
in identifying the projects, which could match their skills and temperament, with a view to
prepare a list of viable projects to publicize the programmes. Cable TVs is also used to advertise
the EDP by MECD. To create self-employment, MCED is conducting following training
programmes:
• Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP)
• Development Programmes for Self Employment
• Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps
• Certificate Course for Developing Competent Personnel for SSI Management
• Trainers Training Programme
• Teachers Training Programme
• School/ College level entrepreneurship Development Programme
• Organization of exhibitions / Discussions / Workshops

The course contents of Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs) generally consists of


six inputs namely, general introduction to entrepreneurship, achievement motivation training,
support system and procedures, market survey and plant visit, managerial skill, project
preparation and feasibility study. The entrepreneurial training and development programs are
helpful for the entrepreneurs leading them to enhance their entrepreneurial qualities and
motivational development. They provide the ways and means through which they can understand
the processes and procedures of establishing businesses or enterprises. In addition, by means of
entrepreneurial training and development programs, they can not only understand the pros and
cons of being entrepreneur but also develop the sense of social responsibilities in setting up and
managing the business. Entrepreneurial training and development programs help the people in
launching new businesses. They are meant for people to reach their full potentials and manage
the business successfully.
MCED has its monthly magazine called Udyojak. Udyojak is also contributing to create
awareness regarding entrepreneurship in society. The content of the magazine is written and
edited in the best way by experts so that each reader of the magazine will get an opportunity to
read inputs from great minds. In this magazine, readers will get a full estimation of different
business every month. The magazine contains advertisements of past trainees, different
industries, banks, etc. The magazine contains an article on trending business ideas.

In order to inculcate the entrepreneurial culture amongst the first generation of entrepreneurs on
a regular basis, the Ministry of MSME had set up three national level Entrepreneurship
Development Institutes viz; National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NI-
MSME) (1960) at Hyderabad, the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Development (NIESBUD) (1983) at Noida (Uttar Pradesh) and Indian Institute of
Entrepreneurship (IIE) (1993) at Guwahati, as autonomous societies. These institutes are
engaged in developing training modules; undertaking research & training; and providing
consultancy services for entrepreneurship development & promotion of MSMEs, including
enhancement of their competitiveness and undertake the task of entrepreneurship and skill
development on a regular basis.
The following are the training programmes offered by NI-MSME to provide support to MSMEs:

1. Training programme for MSME Marketing:


a) Branding and Marketing Strategies for MSMEs
Many small businesses make the mistake of overlooking branding efforts because they
think of themselves as a business and not a brand. Brands, they think, are the big fish in
the pond with huge budgets and national recognition. Small businesses do little to come
up with a fun logo and some flashy business cards. But branding is important for
businesses of all sizes because it increases their value, gives employees direction and
motivation, and makes acquiring new customers easier.
Duration of Programme: 1 week
Target Audience: Executives from industries and business establishments, owner,
managers of firms and officers from industrial promotional organizations
Benefits of the Programme
 Comprehend changes in the consumer behaviour and its imperatives on advertising,
branding, and ultimately how all these yielding return on investment (RoI).
 Understand value of website and traffic generations and utilize website as a valuable tool
for marketing.
 Assess implications of Porter’s 5 Ms to RoI
 Utilize search engine optimization and marketing to generate traffic and monitoring tool
especially drawing the benefits of social networking and building market expertise.

b) Internet and Social Media Marketing for SMEs


The explosive growth of social media sites is overwhelming proof that this arena is ideal
for connecting with existing customers and engaging with prospects. Few excellent
insights enable to get an organization on the path to social media success. The necessity
of communicating with customers through online channels and the role that social media
could play in both obtaining and retaining customers is huge.
Duration of Programme: 1 week
Target Audience: Officers of different organizations and other Govt. officials who
are managing the retail counters and outlets; entrepreneurs associated with for
retail segment.
Benefits of the Programme
 Understanding value of website and traffic generations.
 Understanding a website is a valuable tool for marketing.
 Utilizing Search Engine Optimization and marketing to generate traffic and using website
as billboard.
 Benefits of social networking and building market expertise.

2. Training programmes for MSME Cluster


a) Promoting Innovation in MSME Clusters
Today most of the MSME clusters are suffering due to lack of access to latest technology,
research and development facilities, insufficient finance and workforce imbued with poor
technical and managerial skills which affect their growth and productivity. At the same
time, if we mobilize, network, and assist cluster stakeholders like entrepreneurs, policy
makers, cluster executives, industry associations, technical and management institutions,
they foster innovation through dense knowledge flows and spillovers.
Duration of Programme: 2 days
Target Audience: Entrepreneurs, Industry Associations, Technical and
Management Institutions, and officials involved in MSME development
Benefits of the Programme
 To understand concepts of innovation
 To understand need and importance of networking
 Advantages accruing through collaboration for collective R&D and innovation
 Familiarizing with schemes of Government of India related to Innovation
 Discussing global initiatives on promotion of innovation in clusters

b) Strategic Approaches for MSME Development


Globally many nations particularly developed countries are focusing on number of
strategies for SME development. In India, Innovation, Business Incubation, Cluster
Approach, Skill Development, Public Private Partnership, Social Entrepreneurship and
Export Promotion are prominent among them.
In order to create awareness on various strategic approaches, and also share Government
interventions, ni-msme with its vast experience in research, training and consultancy in
the area of MSME development proposes to organize one week training programme on
“Strategic Approaches for MSME Development”.
Duration of Programme: 1 week
Target Audience: Officials of Industries Department, Technical Consultancy
Organizations, Representatives of Business Incubators and Science & Technology
Parks, Commercial Banks, Faculty of Technical and Management Institutes,
Entrepreneurs, Business Development Service Providers, Representatives from
Chambers of Commerce, Industry Associations and NGOs.
Benefits of the Programme
 To scan policies and programmes of Government of India vis-à-vis State Governments
 To identify key Institutions/ Organizations and their role in development of MSME sector
 To discuss various strategies for MSME development
 To share experiences and best practices
 To design new strategic approaches for specified region

3. Training programme for Total Quaity Management (TQM)


a) Total Quality Management (TQM) for MSMEs
TQM is the combination of Quality and Management tools aimed at increasing business
and reducing losses due to wasteful practices. TQM integrates all organizational
functions including but not limited to marketing, finance, design, engineering and
production, customer service majoring on meeting customer requirements and
organizational objectives.
Duration of Programme: 3 days
Target Audience: Enterprises, MSMEs, Academic institutions & Universities,
MSME Development Institutes, Consultancy Organizations, Incubators, Quality
professionals, Industry Associations, Business development cells,
Entrepreneurship Cells, Engineers, Management consultants, PSUs, Marketing
Agencies and others engaged in technical endeavors

Understanding of TQM tools
TQM techniques and
TQM concepts apart from TQM Implementation in MSME sector.

The following are NI-MSME programmes for individuals:

1. ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (EDP)


An Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP), of 1-8 weeks duration, aims at
training the Science and Technology graduates in the essentials of conceiving, planning,
initiating and launching an economic activity or an enterprise successfully.
The programme content includes class room training on essentials of entrepreneurship
survey of the prevalent socio - economic scenario, identification of business
opportunities, role and function as well as schemes of assistance offered by various
constituents of the support system, preparation of a technically feasible and economically
viable project report, Achievement Motivation Training and also the nuances of
management of an enterprise.
Sessions on technology and finance are also arranged, depending upon the nature of
project selected. Special EDPs are being conducted with more emphasis on linkages with
Research and Development institutions to take up projects based on indigenous
technologies and services, in the area of high technology, such as leather, plastics, bio-
medical equipment, high speed data communication and other emerging areas of
technology.
2. TECHNOLOGY ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (TEDP)
A Technology Based EDP primarily focuses on training and development need of
Science and Technology entrepreneurs in a specific technology area such as:
Leather, Plastic, Electronics & Communication, Fragrance & Flavour, Instrumentation,
Sports Goods, Bio-technology, IT Computer Hardware, Food Processing, Bio-medical
Equipment, Glass & Ceramics, Jute Products, Sustainable Building Materials, Herbs &
Medical Plants Processing, etc.
The participants are provided with hands-on training in indigenous technologies
developed by Research and Development institutions that are available for commercial
exploitation.
3. WOMEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (WEDP)
Women Entrepreneurship Development program (WEDP) aims to build the capacity of
Women-Owned Businesses (WOBs) across India. This program uses a combination of
capacity building workshops and hand-holding/mentoring support to strengthen both the
entrepreneurs and their enterprises and connect them to institutions and the marketplace.
WEDP provides an opportunity for participants to meet successful entrepreneurs to share,
learn and network.
