MERCEDES 722.9
ERRATIC TRANSMISSION BEHAVIOR HOT ONLY
COMPLAINT: After rebuild or repairs, a 722.9 may experience erratic shift behavior after long extended periods
of driving. No codes may be present.
CAUSE: One cause may be that the cooling circuit for the Y3/8n4 TCM has been compromised. The
cooling circuit originates from the clutch regulating valves in the valve body. There are 6 in total,
the B1, B2/BR, B3, K1, K2 and K3 (Figure 2). When these valves are regulating clutch apply
pressure, they also provide pressure to the TCM cooling circuit. Included in the circuit are 2
check valves, check valves 1 and 2 (Figure 3). These check valves balance pressure to the TCM
where it is directed to flow across the bottom of the TCM for cooling. TCM cooling pressure is
dumped into the sump at the Check Valve 2 location (Figure 4). If either one of these check valves
are missing or compromised, insufficient cooling may occur causing the TCM to overheat.
CORRECTION: These check valves are not sold separately, if they are missing or in need of replacement, they
will need to be obtained from another valve body.
Note: It is not uncommon for this transmission developing problems and storing one or more
codes for the following: the Y3/8n1 Turbine speed sensor, the Y3/8n2 Internal speed sensor, the
Y3/8n3 Output speed sensor and the Y3/8s1 Selector range sensor (Figure 1). This complaint is
not the cause of a TCM overheat condition. Often times codes for these sensors are the result of
circuit issues in the conductor plate. There are facilities that can repair these issues avoiding the
difficulty of purchasing a new valve body/TCM assembly.
