Final Reflection

Genie Wiley: The Feral Child

Before I officially start the reflection for the story of Genie, I remember the question our

Professor asked, what did we learn in our subject? I just want to share my learning in our

subject first, aside from having knowledge on the different sign language and the importance of

it, aside from knowing the worth of children with special needs what I’ve learned most is the

importance of giving important to the inclusive education especially here in our country. At

first, I personally treat students with disabilities or special needs as a normal student like in our

classes in our major, we have a classmate that has disability but honestly I see her as a normal

student because I can see, like us, she can do everything, she’s good at everything like when we

have reporting, activities, and other school works, she also has a very beautiful voice which a

person like me didn’t had so I really think of her as a normal student like us but now that we

tackle this subject, I realize that yes there is nothing wrong on seeing her as a normal student

because she is still a student like us but I should give her a special treatment as her classmate, I

realized that I should treat every student every person especially those who had special needs

with extra care and love because as I learn in our subject, students or person like them needs

special love from the person that surrounds them and person like them indeed deserve to feel

the love of everyone around them.

I realized the importance of inclusive education in this subject because person with

disabilities deserves the right to quality education. The government should see how important
it is to students with special needs for them to give importance and prioritize the improvement

of having inclusive education here in our country because as we can see, there’s a lot of person

with disabilities has still no access to education, and that is one thing our government must take

action before it is too late like what I have watched – the story of the feral child, Genie Wiley.

I will start at the last part of the story or the outcome of the case of Genie, as what the

story said, the outcome is considered as a failure because Genie never reached her full

potential meaning Genie’s health can be better if she receives full support, if only there are laws

that can support her situation, if only there is stability in taking care of her, if only there is a

better place for her, Genie’s health or situation will be a lot better, she has a big possibility to

develop her full potential, if only if. That’s why, now that I have knowledge and watched this

story of Genie, I can say that our government must improve and gave importance to the needs

of person with disabilities and special needs, we never know, maybe there’s someone out there

experiencing the same as Genie’s situation, we must take action!

This story is not just an eye-opener but a heart-breaking story. The important part of

living is to have someone whom you will live with and for me that is our family, family is indeed

the foundation of everything to the children. It really breaks my heart realizing that while

others are living happily with their parents, learning how to run, climb and fall there is Genie

who is locked up in a dark room alone at the age of 14 months? How can a parent endure that?

How can Genie survive that?

I used the word “survive” because even though she became a feral child and has

developmental delays she still survive, she still be able to live her life despite the experiences

she experience while being locked in that dark room alone at the very young age for 13 years. I
feel proud of her, I feel proud of her on how she endure everything and let herself heal through

the help of her doctors, therapist and even psychiatrists who investigate to her case.

Also the thing that I notice in the story is that why a parent look at his child as a person

with disabilities even if it is not and even the doctor that checked on Genie when she was 14

months old think that maybe she was indeed disabled. When I hear that through the story I

listened to, first thing that come to my mind is that if only the doctor had just examined Genie’s

condition carefully and think of some possible causes why Genie’s behavior and condition is like

that, it would not have reached that level where she experience being treated like that, it might

have been resolved immediately.

Indeed, having knowledge and deeper understanding about the different situation and

different disabilities that a person can have is very important. Knowing how to communicate to

them and how to approach them can be a big help to their situation. Everyone should have

knowledge about it because anyone can encounter a person like them, person with disabilities

and special need is just out there seeking for love to each every one of us and wanting to be

accepted by who they really are and waiting for the moment that they feel the belongingness in

their surroundings. Everyone should have the knowledge and deep understanding about their

situation so that we know how we will approach them in a right way where they can feel the

love that they deserve.
