01 Introduction of Mechanics of Deformable Solids HCMUT 2022

This document provides an introduction and overview of mechanics of materials. It discusses that mechanics of materials is a branch of mechanics that deals with how materials react to external loads and deform. It outlines the objectives of a mechanics of materials course, which include understanding stress and strain relationships, calculating stresses and deformations, and assessing structural integrity. Examples of applications to mechanical and aerospace engineering are also provided.

What is Mechanics of Materials?
MECHANICS
branch of physical science
STATICS concerned with the condition
mechanics of of rest or motion of bodies due
bodies at rest to forces

DYNAMICS
mechanics of
bodies in motion

Applied for particles and rigid bodies

What is Mechanics of Materials?
• Mechanics of materials = strength of
materials = mechanics of solids = mechanics
of deformable bodies

• Branch of mechanics that studies the

relationships between external load
applied to a deformable body and the
intensity of internal forces acting within
the body

• Involves computing the deformations of the

body, stability

What is Mechanics of Materials?
Deformable bodies is a solid that
changes size and/or shape due to
loads or temperature applied.
Deformation can be small,
invisible to naked eyes

◆ Statics can provide the reaction at support if load is given

◆ Mechanics of materials can answer to the following questions :

◆ W which would cause the wing to break, and where it would occur
◆ the relation of C and W
◆ would a taper shape be ‘better’ than constant thickness?
◆ would composite be preferable than aluminum?

Law, and Compatibility Equations for Structural Analysis
2. Calculate Stresses, Stress distributions, Principal Stresses, and
Deformations in a Structures for any types of (including
combined) loadings
3. Solve Statically determinate and Statically indeterminate
structures
4. Asses the integrity of the structure under static loadings

This is an excellent resource. Why?

• Easy to read (relatively), easy to understand.

• Lots of relevant examples!
• Lots of problems to practice, with answers!
• Lecture notes are only the basic facts. We
expect you to do the background reading

How to Master Mechanics of Materials
1. Pay attention when the lecturer gives explanation
2. Actively participating by solving the problems in your own
note book
3. Read the text book related to the subject explained by the
lecturer, study the problems discussed in the class or during
collaborative learning session without seeing the solution
4. Re-work the problems done in 3, without looking at the
solution manual
5. Practice by solving problem set from the text book, if there
is any difficulties, discuss it with your friends or assistant
How to Read Text Book
1. Find the meaning of a word you do not understand in the
dictionary
2. If the text book is belong to you, write down the meaning
of the words you find from dictionary using pencil. If you
borrow the book, you write it down in your note book
3. If a section is difficult to understand, find a key paragraph.
Then find the core sentence of the paragraph. Try to
understand the meaning of the sentence.
4. Connect the paragraph in 3 with the previous paragraph
and previous section
