Preparing for and taking the Praxis Exams are some of the many obstacles education
majors must face when seeking a degree in teaching. The Praxis Exams must be completed
before I continue with my BS in Elementary Education at UNLV. The passing scores for these
exams in the state of Nevada are as follows: Reading requires a score of 156, Writing requires a
The main preparation I took was by looking over my current math notes. I am currently
enrolled in MATH 123 and took MATH 122 last semester, which no doubt helped me brush up
on my math abilities. I’ve always done well in math, but without these two most recent classes I
don’t think I would have done as well. I’m not very nervous for the actual Math Praxis Exam. I
think as long as I read everything slowly out loud to myself, I will do fine. The main part of what
I struggle with during testing is slowing down. I usually am confident in my academic abilities,
and that causes me to speed through things. If I get the answers wrong during math, it is because
I did not look closely enough at the question being asked. I chose not to look at the ETS
The math exam I did expectedly well on, scoring an 83%. This score means I am likely to
pass. I know that if I had taken the time to go back over every single question and redone the
work I might have gotten an even better score. However, the real test is timed, so I’m not sure
I’ll be afforded that luxury. As for the writing exam, I was pleased by my score. Taking the time

to read through everything carefully was a challenge at times, I’ll admit. When it comes to doing
something like this for a very long time, I tend to struggle; which is why test taking can be quite
unenjoyable. I received a score of 85%., meaning I am likely to pass this section as well. Lastly,
for the reading portion, I’m not surprised I received a poor grade. This section was my most
challenging, and I found myself overwhelmed by how long it was taking. Admittedly I wanted it
to be over, so half way through I just guessed answers without reading the passages. These
paragraphs were painfully boring and extremely difficult to focus on. I love reading, but my
brain could not handle how time consuming and bland it was. I stopped and started many times,
finally feeling so exasperated that I just gave up. I know that when I take the real Reading Exam,
I am going to have to bite down and really try extremely hard to keep my focus sharp. It will be
even more difficult for me given my condition, but I must overcome it if I am going to succeed.
As for future preparations for the Praxis Exams, I cannot see myself purchasing any
outside sources to aid in my studying. I will continue to rely on my own written notes for math.
As for reading and writing, the only thing that would prevent me from getting a passing score is
myself. When the time comes to take these tests, I am going to have to bring my absolute A
game and make sure my ability to focus is strong that day. Sleeping well and eating a good
breakfast will be things I make sure I do. I plan on taking the exams all together, but I may
decide to take them separately so I can focus wholly on each subject without getting so
overwhelmed.
