Group 2 Research Plan

The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of Barringtonia asiatica leaves extract on mortality rates of the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) compared to commercial insecticide and pure water. The researchers will prepare extracts with concentrations of 25ml, 50ml, 75ml, and 100ml. Forty cockroaches will be exposed to each treatment and a control. Mortality will be observed and one-way ANOVA used to analyze differences between treatment groups. The goal is to identify the most effective extract concentration for cockroach extermination.

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant difference among the Barringtonia asiatica leaves

extract, commercial treatment, and pure water on the mortality rate of American

cockroach (Periplaneta americana).

Statement of the Problem

I. Objectives

The following are the main objectives of the study:

1. To determine the effectiveness of B. asiatica leaves extract as insecticide

against P. americana.

2. To identify what concentration of extract is the most effective on exterminating

P. americana.

3. To evaluate the significant difference of B. asiatica leaves extract, commercial

insecticide, and pure water.

II. Research Questions

1. What is the mean mortality rate of P. americana when treated with B. asiatica

leaves extract?

2. What concentration of B. asiatica leaves extract is the most effective in

exterminating P. americana.

3. Is there a significant difference between the B. asiatica leaves extract

compared to the commercial insecticide?

Scope and Delimitation

The main goal of this study is to identify and evaluate the efficacy of B.

asiatica leaves extract on the mortality rate of P. americana. The researchers will

use the leaves of the B. asiatica plant and the adult P. americana only. A local

agriculturist will identify the plant. In collecting test animals, the researchers will

adapt a study from Ang et.al. (n.d). This study will be conducted at Barangay

Coronon, Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur from March 2022 to April 2022.

Methodology

Collection of Plant Material

The B. asiatica leaves in good condition will be collected at Barangay

Coronon, Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur on the day of the experiment to ensure its

freshness.

Preparation of Extract

This method was adopted from Ang et.al. (n.d). After the plant material is

obtained, the researchers will wash it with clean water and will be blended. It will be

filtered using a cheesecloth or strainer to ensure that there will be no other particles

stay in the fluid, and will be placed in a clean container. The extract will be then

measured using a graduated cylinder in the desired amount 25ml, 50ml, 75ml, and

100ml for the concentration and each will be stored in a spray bottle.

1. Treatment 1 (T1) = 25 ml Barringtonia asiatica leaves extract and 75 ml of

distilled water.
2. Treatment 2 (T2) = 50 ml Barringtonia asiatica leaves extract and 50 ml of

distilled water.

3. Treatment 3 (T3) = 75 ml Barringtonia asiatica leaves extract and 25 ml of

distilled water.

4. Treatment 4 (T4) = 100 ml Barringtonia asiatica leaves extract and 0 ml of

distilled water.

5. Controlled Treatment (T0) = has no concentration given, meaning no

Barringtonia asiatica will be applied.

Collection of Test Animals

Forty American cockroaches will be collected from their hidden places using

any technique and ensuring that the test animals will be stress-free. Researchers will

build a temporary environment of cockroaches before experimentation. They will use

a plastic container and punch holes for air ventilation of cockroaches.

Risk and Safety

There are risks involved in preparing the B. asiatica leaves extraction, such as

eye infections, skin irritations, inhaling harmful fumes, and cuts from glass

containers. Researchers are expected to take steps such as practicing good

personal hygiene, providing personal protective equipment, acquiring awareness of

how chemical reactions initiate, recognizing and being aware of how to respond

when an uncontrolled reaction occurs during the extraction process, understanding

the consequences of a reaction such as toxic gas release, and identifying

safeguards to prevent uncooperative reactions.

Data Analysis

The researchers will use One way Anova to determine whether there are any

significant differences between the means of three or more independent (unrelated)

groups.
