I. INTRODUCTION

Agriculture is critical to the economy. Over 58 percent of rural families rely on agriculture as
their primary source of income. The green revolution was characterized by the use of high yielding
varieties of seeds and fertilizers, which increased productivity; however, there is a state of decline in
productivity due to changes in the environment, such as depleting water tables, greenhouse gas
emissions, and contamination of surface and ground water, which harms soil fertility. Wet land and
water availability and accessibility are diminishing, resulting in a decrease in agricultural productivity.
Consumers are putting pressure on water corporations, food producers, and farmers to deliver potable
water, high-quality food free of contaminants, and food with appropriate nutritional values. The
accumulation of contaminants in soil, water resources, and food as a result of the continuous use of
various cleaning agents is a severe hazard to human health.

II. A STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF CLEANING AGENTS (HOUSEHOLD) ON SEED GERMINATION

III.
A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Early growth of germinating seeds is reliant on water intake, soil fertility, and a variety of other
factors environmental elements that are favorable However, from 1940 forward, until currently, and
maybe in the future, home cleaning chemicals are likely to be utilized frequently and often. These
cleaning services Soap bars and liquid gels for washing are examples of agents. detergent powders or
cleaning cakes for hands, face, or body. To clean, laundry products and home cleaners are needed.
furniture, glass, and plastic goods, as well as cleaning kitchen dishes and Every day, utensils and
dishwashing products are used.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. How household cleaning agents affects seed germination?
2. How detergents or cleaning agents reduce seed growth?

C. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of various cleaning agents on germination of
seeds and a proposal for the design of biosensors to monitor the fertility of the soil or water directly and
indirectly. Seeds were germinated in a petri plate containing various concentrations of detergents,
cleaning agents and laundry blue. The results were cleaning agents at higher concentration has reduced
seedling growth and also its seed vigor index were less when compared to the control. No germination
was observed in presence of laundry blue, floor disinfectant showed low germination percentage and
least growth was observed in stiffener and soap solution. The developed seeds showed difference in
coloration and their root and shoot lengths were short and coiled

D. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study will focus on selected farmers in Barangay Malaking Ambling Magdalena Laguna from January
2022 – April 2022.

E. DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. Biosensors - a device which uses a living organism or biological molecules, especially
enzymes or antibodies, to detect the presence of chemicals.
2. Germination - the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of
dormancy.
3. Surfactant - a substance which tends to reduce the surface tension of a liquid in which it is
dissolved.
