Question 3
(a) i- plenty
ii-fragile
iii-hate
iv-walked slowly
v-looked closely
(b) i-We can tell that Dhuki was loyal since he had been in service since even before the
narrator’s birth and was still in service even after the death of his master. When he
was ordered to cover the well, he did not hesitate to follow orders even though he
hated to do the task.
ii-Master Sahib had given Dhuki the task of covering up the old well in his absence.
While leaving he had explained that it was “too damned dangerous” to have an open
well in the middle of the garden.
iii-The well which had been there for over 50 years, long before the house was built,
had a colony of pigeons living in it whose soft cooing filled the garden with a sweet
melody. It was useful since during the hot, dry summer months the well was always
a dependable source of water even when the taps ran dry. The bhishti also still used
it, to fill his goatskin bag with clear water and sprinkle it around the path of the
house to keep the dust down.
iv-Making full use of his last free morning, the narrator took all his favourite books
and stored them away in an outhouse, where he could come for them from time to
time. He then filled his pockets with mangoes and climbed up the banyan tree ,
which was the coolest place on a hot day in June.
He thought it was his last free morning since his stepfather, Master Sahib was
supposed to return that very evening and according to him, the Master’s presence
made life unpleasant.
v-The narrator had heard the jingle of tonga bells and the squeak of unoiled wheels
which meant that a tonga was coming in through the gate.He thought to himself that
it was too early for his mother to return , so he peered through the thick waxy leaves
of the trees to satiate his curiosity, during which he nearly fell off the tree.
He did not get down from the tree as he had no intention of confronting his
step father before his mother had returned.
(c)
The Major, on seeing the
uncovered well began to admonish
Dhuki who made various excuses,
none of which satisfied his
master. The Dhuki complained about
something bubbling in the well.
As the Major bent over
to see, Dhuki tapped him
lightly and he fell. Dhuki
then covered the well quickly.

New York-10024.
19th October,2020.
Dear Neelam,
It has been quite a lot of trouble to have a letter delivered to India all the way from America
and I surely believe that you will be receiving this letter after a few weeks since I had sent it.
Anyway, I’m very excited to tell you about my plans to come back to India!
My college lets us off for a month soon for Halloween and I will be coming back to Kolkata
to visit Mum and Dad and you, of course. Since there are sales knocking at every store
currently, so do tell me if there is anything you wish for me to get for you. Also, the prices
here are quite less than those of India and there’s a wider variety of almost everything.
Don’t hesitate to ask for anything because even if you do not ask, I will definitely be bringing
you a present from my side. I especially know of a great stationary store which has massive
discounts and since your new semester will beginning soon you can ask for any new school
supplies that you will be needing.
Do write to me soon, as I will be leaving next week and so I need to start packing. Tell Anita
too about the news and ask her the same for anything she needs. I’m already so excited to
meet you all again!
Your Loving friend,
Navya.

Dear Sir,
I happened to come upon the advertisements sent out by your organisation, Study Smart,
entailing scholarship offers for a number of reputed colleges in India. I myself would also
apply for one of these scholarships, with your help.
I have always seen law as my path to follow and looked at Jindal as my ideal college. It was
quite fortunate that I saw your advertisement, because I have been trying extremely hard to
apply for a scholarship since the past few weeks. It would be a great help if you could share
with me details of the scholarships and the cost to apply through the means of your
organisation.
Thank you so much for this enormous opportunity as it means a lot to me. Please do email
be as quick as possible as I wish to send out all my forms and applications by this month.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
Navya Almal.
Question 1
(d) People say that if an old person makes an insulting joke at you, you should just
ignore it as they assumed that he or she was going senile. This story is about my
grandmother who was, well, I’m not sure what to call it, but if there’s a superlative
for senile then that’s it.
Grandma was very, very, VERY absent-minded. Too explain myself I can give an
example from last winter, when she wore all her clothes in the entire opposite order-
that is she started from her jackets and wore her bloomers right on top of them all!
Dad just gets simply annoyed but the rest of us laugh our guts out, every time she
does something silly. Actually, everything she does makes us go hysterical but the
events of last Sunday, especially made us go weak at our knees. Dad was supposed
to send out a package to his sister, living in Chennai and had given Grandma the task
of taping up the parcel. Grandma seemed to be in her right mind that day as she did
not fuss but obeyed and sat down to complete the simple job. But what neither of us
realised, was as she bent over, her spectacle fell into the box and she didn’t even
notice! Grandma continued to pack the box and was soon done in the next few
minutes. Surprisingly, none of us, not even Grandma saw the absence of her glasses.
The reality was that Grandma without her glasses was doubly absent-minded as she
could barely see anything and in soon, she put her dentures in her cup of tea instead
of the glass of water! She then went on to put her slippers in the freezer, gave the
dog a plate of salad(and ended with a plate of raw steak for herself), use the mop as
her walking stick and even ‘read’ the newspaper upside down! This didn’t surprise
but instead gave us our daily dose of laughter and yet no one suspected the absence
of the glasses.
The next morning during breakfast, Grandma poured orange juice into her
cereal instead of milk, spread jam on her fruits instead of the toast and added sugar
to her water instead of the tea. Dad expressed his annoyance by grumbling while my
sister just snapped a picture from her phone to share it with her friends to give them
too, a bright start off to the day. None of us had actually realised that this was all
because Grandma didn’t have her spectacles until the very next day, we received a
parcel from Dad’s sister. And you would never guess the shock and shrieks and the
tears we had shed out of laughter when we found Grandma’s glasses inside the box!
