Problems On Resultant of Two Forces Acting at A Point (Parallelogram Law of Forces) Tutorial Problems

Two forces are acting on a particle at a point. The magnitudes and angle between the forces are provided. The problems involve calculating the resultant force - its magnitude and direction - given the individual forces. Some problems also involve determining the magnitude of one of the forces given information about the resultant when the forces are varied. The document provides 10 practice problems of this type, along with the answers.

Problems on Resultant of Two forces acting at a point

(Parallelogram Law of forces)

Sub: Engineering Mechanics Tutorial Problems

(1) Two forces of magnitude 20 N and 40 N are acting on a particle such that
the angle between the two is 135⁰. If both these forces are acting away from the
particle, calculate their resultant and find its direction.
(JNTUH MAY-2016)
[2M]
(Ans:R = 29.47 N, α = 28.6⁰ )
(2) The resultant of two concurrent forces is 1500 N and the angle between the
forces is 90⁰. The resultant makes an angle of 36 ⁰ with one of the force. Find
the magnitude of each force. (JNTUH,August/September-2016) [3M]
(Ans:P = 1213.86 N , Q = 881.26 N)
(3) Two forces equal to 2F and F act on a particle. If the first be doubled and
the second increased by 15 N, the direction of the resultant remains unaltered.
Find the value of F. (JNTUH, Dec-14/Jan-2015) [5M] (Ans:F = 15 N)

(4) Two forces 15N and 12N are acting at a point. The angle between the forces
is 60⁰. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant.
(JNTUH JUNE-2015)
[2M]
(5) Two forces of magnitudes 3P, 2P respectively acting at a point have a
resultant R. If the first force is doubled, the magnitude of the resultant is
doubled. Find the angle between the forces. ( Ans: θ = 120°)

(6) The resultant of two forces, one of which is double the other is 260 N. If the
direction of the larger force is reversed and the other remains unaltered, the
resultant reduces to 180N. Determine the magnitude of the forces and the
angle between the forces.(JNTUH) (Ans:P = 100 N , Q = 200 N and θ = 63.89⁰)

(7) A 100N force which makes an angle of 45º with the horizontal x-axis is to be
replaced by two forces, a horizontal force F and a second force of 75N
magnitude. Find F. (Ans: F = 45.71N)

(8) Two forces equal to 2P and P act on a particle. If the first force be doubled
and the second force is increased by 12KN, the direction of their resultant
remain unaltered. Find the value of P. (Ans: P = 12KN)

(9) The angle between the two forces of magnitude 20KN and 15KN is 60º, the
20KN force being horizontal. Determine the resultant in magnitude and
direction if
(i ) the forces are pulls (Ans: R = 30.41KN,  = 25.28º)
(ii) the 15KN force is push and 20KN force is a pull.
(Ans: R = 18.027KN, a = 46.1º)
(10) Two forces P and Q acting at a point have a resultant R. If Q be doubled, R
is doubled. Again if the direction of Q is reversed, then R is doubled, show
that P : Q : R = : :
