Department of Education: Republic of The Philippines

This document contains a lesson plan for teaching 8th grade science about the digestive system. The objectives are for students to explain the digestive process and appreciate the importance of digestion. The lesson involves demonstrations like eating crackers and a "bread in the bag" activity to illustrate digestion. Students will discuss the parts of the digestive system, play a board game to learn the pathway of food, and complete a labeling activity. They will learn about ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation and excretion. The lesson aims to explain the key concepts through hands on activities and discussions.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Explain ingestion, absorption, assimilation, and excretion. (S8LT-IVa-13
1.1. Discuss the digestive system and the process of digestion.
1.2. Trace the pathway of food through digestive tract

B. REVIEWING PREVIOUS LESSON OR PRESENTING THE NEW LESSON

(ELICIT)

Let’s Recap
The teacher will present pictures of different scientists with their contribution to the
development of the periodic table and she will call students to recall the name of those
scientists.

He arranged elements according to their atomic masses and he

called this arrangement Law of Octaves. And he is _(the name of
this scientist._)

He arranged elements according to their atomic number rather than

their atomic mass. And he is_(the name of this scientist._)

He group the elements into group of three which he called Law of

Triads. He is _(the name of this scientist._)

He arranged the elements in order of increasing atomic

mass, recurring pattern appeared in their properties. And
he is ____________________.

He arranged elements based in order of increasing

atomic mass while putting in groups those woth similar
properties. He is known as the Father of Modern
Periodic table. And he was_____________.

C. ESTABLISHING A PURPOSE FOR THE LESSON (ENGAGE)

“Act Me Out”
The teacher will give each of the students a piece of biscuits then they are going to eat
it and observe what happened to the biscuits before and after they chew it. Then the
teacher will ask questions to the students. The procedures and questions are:
Procedure:
1. Cut the cracker into a half.
2. Put one half of crackers into your mouth and chew. What it tastes like? Was it sweet?
Plain? Hard? Soft?
3. Place a new cracker in your mouth and let it sit for 1.5 minutes before chewing. What it
feels like after 1 minute in your mouth? What was the main texture 9feeling) difference in
your mouth between chewing right away and waiting 1.5 minutes before chowing down.

“Bread in the Bag’

The teacher will present an activity called the “Bread in the Bag” and she will call
one to demonstrate the activity. The other students will just observe what the student
doing. Then, the teacher will ask the questions to the students while she is demonstrating
the activity.
Procedures:
1. Take a piece of bread.
2. Obtain the zip lock bag.
3. Tear the sliced of bread into smaller pieces and placed it into the bag. What does this
represent?
4. Pour smaller amount of water into the bag. What does this represent?
5. Close the bag and squish the bread with your finger until all pieces are small. What
does this represent?
6. Drain the liquid contents down to the sink by creating a small gap which prevent by
escaping. What does this represent?
7. Put all the content of the bag into the garbage. What does this represent?

Then the teacher will discuss the essence of the activity and she will present the
objectives of the lesson.

E. DISCUSSING NEW CONCEPTS AND PRACTICING NEW SKILLS (EXPLORE)

The teacher will start the discussion by asking the students their prior knowledge
about the digestive system. She will also ask students to give the organs that make up the
digestive system. Then, the teacher will discuss the two ways of digesting food and the
process of digestion.

F. DISCUSSING NEW CONCEPTS AND PRACTICING NEW SKILLS #2

(EXPLORE)
A Gutsy Game!
The teacher will present students a game entitled “Gusty Game” that is similar to the
game snake and ladder. This activity is a board game that needs at least two players. The
materials needed are the die, game board and token. Then, students will be the one to roll
the dice and move their token according to the number of the die. This game
demonstrates the flow of food into our digestive system. Then, the first one to reach the
finish tile wins. Then, the students will answer the guide questions and present it after.
Procedures:
1. Find someone whom you can play the board game with.
2. Choose a playing token for you and your playmate; place your token on the board’s
starting line.
3. Take turns in rolling the dice.
4. The number on the dice tells the number of boxes you may move your token.

5. Should your token land on a box with instructions beside it? Execute the
instructions.
6. The player who first makes it all the way throughout the digestive system and down
to finish line wins the game.
Q1. What did you notice from our game or in the game board?
Q2. What does the playing token represent?
Q3. What do the boxes on the game represent?
Q4. What do the instructions beside the boxes tell you about the digestive system?

G. DEVELOPING MASTERY (EXPLAIN)

Digestive System Tour - Completion and Analysis
With the same group, the students will complete the tour in the digestive system by
placing the name of the parts involved in the process of ingestion, digestion, absorption,
assimilation, and excretion. Choose your answers from the box of words at the side.
(Take note: Answers may be used once, more than once, or not at all.)

After successfully labeling the parts of the digestive system, make a short narration oh
how people digest food starting from the moment the food was ingested to the mouth
to the excretion of it as waste materials. Make use of the words you labeled in the
illustration.
H. FINDING PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF CONCEPTS AND SKILLS IN
DAILY LIVING (EXPLAIN)
The class will be divided into two groups to perform the task assigned to them.
Group 1-. The Artist- The students will draw and label the structure of digestive system
and also label which part is the ingestion, digestion, assimilation and absorption. Make a
simple explanation on how the digestion works.

Group 2- The Writer- The students will create an essay about the importance of digestive
system in our body and ways on how they can have a healthy digestive system.
They will be given3-5 minutes to finish the task. Then, they will choose one representative
who will share and discuss their work in front.
