Introduction

As engineers, we solve problems.

To solve problems, we design things.

We design,
• parts,
• algorithms,
• processes,
• machines,
• software,
• hardware,
• etc.
Introduction

Engineering Design

• A new machine, structure, or system must exist in the mind of the

engineer or designer before it can become a reality.

• The design process is an exciting and challenging effort, during which the
engineer uses graphic language as means to create, record, analyze, and
communicate design concepts or ideas.

• The engineer or designer must understand how to read and write in the
graphic language.
Introduction

The Design Process

Introduction

What is CAD?

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the technology concerned with the use of

computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, and
optimization of a design.
Introduction

CAD, CAM, CAE

Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the technology concerned with the

use of computer systems to plan, manage, and control manufacturing
operations.

Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) is the technology concerned with the

use of computer systems to analyze CAD geometry, allowing the designer
to simulate and study how the product will behave.
Introduction

Components of CAD Systems

• Computing machine • Solid Modeling
• Data storage devices • Assembly Modeling
• CAD/CAM/CAE System • Motion Simulation
• Communication devices • Finite Element Analysis

Graphics
All drawing techniques are based on the construction of the basic geometric
elements such as lines, points, arcs and circles.

Point:
• A point represents a location in space.
• It can be created by the intersection of two lines.
• All of the geometric elements can be created by the points.

15
Graphics
Line:
• A line is simply the distance between two points.
• Line is another basic element that can be used create other geometric elements.

Straight Line Parallel Lines Perpendicular Lines

16
Graphics
Angles:
• An angle is formed by the intersection of two lines.
• The common measure of the angle is degree.

Straight Angle Right Angle Acute Angle

Complementary Angle Supplementary Angle

Obtuse Angle
17
Graphics
Polygons:
• A polygon is a multisided plane figure bounded by lines.
• If the polygon has equal side lengths and angles, it is called a regular polygon.

Square Pentagon Hexagon Heptagon

18
Graphics
Triangles:
• A triangle is a three-sided polygon.
• There are four types of triangles, which are scalene, isosceles, equilateral and right
triangles.

Equilateral Triangle Right Triangle Isosceles Triangle Scalene Triangle

19
Graphics
Quadrilaterals:
• A quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon.
• The sum of the interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360°.

Square Rectangle Rhombus Trapezoid

20
Graphics
Circles and Arcs:
• A circle is closed curve.
• All of the points on the circle are at the same distance from the center of the circle.

21
Graphics
Ellipse:
• An ellipse is created by a point moving so that the sum of its distances from the foci points
is constant.

22
Graphics
Solids:

Prisms Cylinders Spheres

Pyramids Cones
Torus
