ACET208 Practical - Exercise - 1
ACET208 Practical - Exercise - 1
Objectives
• To familiarize with the use of a theodolite.
• To perform a 3-station, Closed Traverse and calculate the Eastings and Northings of the
stations.
• To apply Triangulation equations for determining the reduced level of a target.
Procedure
• Locate the 3 stations in the field.
• Students from each team should first measure using a tape the sides of the traverse.
• Each team will set-up, level and position the theodolite over the station. Next step is to
familiarize with its components and operation.
• Each team will take a round of horizontal angle readings at each traverse station. A
local origin and local North will be assumed. All students will record different versions of
horizontal angles (using opposite face, swing and change of reading on the horizontal
circle). The readings will be recorded in tables as outlined in the Lecture notes.
• For the purpose of Triangulation, the Reduced Level of the “station” for each team will
be assumed to be +50.000m above mean sea level. Aim at a convenient level on the
staff (e.g. 2m) and record the vertical angle. Measure the Height of the Instrument.
• You may use a ranging rod and graduated staff to assist you in targeting your points.
Assignment
Your assignment should include:
• Cover page with title, name and date.
• Sketch of the traverse (approximately to scale) and definition of local Origin and North.
• Booking of data for your team. Also, a record of the length of the traverse sides (see
separate tables below).
• Reduction of angles at the stations and calculation of mean values for included angles.
• Calculation of whole circle bearings (azimuths), using corrected included angles (show
in table).
• Calculation of Northings and Eastings for each station.
• Report of the misclosure at the origin.
• Calculate the R.L. of your “target” point.
Submission date
The assignment should be submitted in 3 weeks from lab day.
Notes
• Use a ruler for drawing your tables.
• Marks will be deducted for poor presentation.
• Please ask if you are not sure how to proceed with calculations.
• Late submittals will be penalized.
• You may work with your teams but your report should be your own individual work.
