Input Devices

A computer system consists of hardware, software, and liveware (users). The main components of hardware are input devices, central processing units, output devices, and storage devices. Software includes system software and application software. Input devices convert human input into machine-readable form and include keying devices like keyboards, pointing devices like mice, and scanning devices like optical scanners. Common pointing devices are mice, trackballs, and light pens while common keying devices include keyboards, flexible keyboards, and touchscreen keyboards. Optical scanners use light beams to capture data and include OMR, barcode, and OCR scanners while magnetic scanners read magnetically encoded data.

Computer system:

A collection of components that collectively function as a whole to achieve the desired goal is
known as a computer system. The following are the main components of the computer system.
I. Hardware
II. Software
III. Liveware

Hardware
All the physical parts of the computer that make up a computer’s system are hardware. Hardware
may be classified into input devices, central processing units, output devices, and storage
devices.

Software
These are the sets of programs that instruct a computer what to do. The main category of
software is system software and application software.

Liveware
Liveware is known as a user who uses the computer. The function of the user is to operate a
computer using installed hardware and software components.

Input devices
Input devices are hardware components that convert users’ input which is in the human-readable
form to machine form that a computer can process. The input device can be classified according
to methods that are used to enter data into keying devices, pointing devices, scanning devices,
digital cameras, speech recognition, and smart input devices.

Keying devices
The keying device converts typed numbers, letters, and special characters into machine-readable
form before processing takes place. The most common keying device is the keyboard. The
following are other keying devices.
I. Flexible keyboard
II. Ergonomic keyboard
III. Touchscreen keyboard
IV. Braille keyboard.
Pointing devices
Pointing devices are used for controlling an insertion pointing or cursor on the screen. The most
common type of pointing device is a mouse. The following are the most common types of
pointing devices.
I. Trackball
II. Joystick
III. Light pen

Scanners
Scanners mean capturing data from an object and converting it into digital format. The scanner
can be classified into two groups.
I. Optica scanner
Optical scanners capture data using optical beam light technology. A light beam passes
over an object and the image is analyzed by specialized software.
 Optical Mark Recognition scanner, detect marks made on a piece of paper using
ink or a soft pencil by passing an infrared beam over the marks. OMR is mostly used
in marking multiple-choice questions, analyzing responses from questionnaires, and
selecting numbers combination from lottery tickets.
 Optical Bar recognition scanners are used to capture data encoded as lines of
verifying thickness known as barcodes or universal product code (UPC).
 Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanners are used to read handwritten,
printed characters and images. Most OCR scanners have capabilities of scanning
graphical images such as pictures and converting the images into digital form for
editing printing.
II. Magnetic scanner
Magnetic scanners are used to capture data written using magnetic ink or coded onto the
magnetic strip. Common examples of magnetic scanners are Magnetic Ink Character
Recognition (MICR) and card reader.
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition is used to read a character written using magnetic
ink.

Digitizers
Digitizers are also known as Graphical tables allow the user to directly draw an image using a
stylus. The image drawn does not appear on the tablet but on the computer screen. Digitizers are
used by engineers and architectural plans.

Digital Camera
Digital cameras are used to capture pictures and videos that are stored in digital forms. Most of
them are installed with a storage medium known as a memory card. Memory cards are used to
store captured videos or images, which can be edited, viewed, printed on computers.

Speech Recognition devices.

Speech recognition devices are used to capture natural sounds and convert the input into digital
forms. Speech recognition is a more convenient method of input and is used by people with low
literacy and physical disability.

Smart Boards
Smartboards are connected to computers. Contents from computers are projected onto the
surface of the smartboard where users control the computers and write using special pen.
