rainforest in the world. It covers Brazil,
Peru, Colombia, Suriname, Ecuador,
Bolivia and French Guinea. It performs an
important function. The plants take in
carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. The
plants clean the atmosphere because
carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas.

Scientists are very interested in the plants

of the Amazon because they can cure
illnesses. For example, some plants can
reduce a temperature and some can help
with headaches and muscle pains. Drauzio
Varella, a researcher from Brazil, is
looking for a cure for cancer in the
Amazon. It is difficult because there are
lots of different kinds of plants.

Another problem is that people are

destroying the rainforest. They are cutting
down the trees. The Amazon people use
plants in everyday life so the destruction
of the rainforest is a problem for them.

Ÿ Paragraph 1: What is the problem? What causes

it? What will happen if we don’t stop it from
happening?
Global warming is a problem for the planet.
Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increase the
temperature of the Earth. Unless we do something
soon, we will destroy the Earth.
Ÿ Paragraph 2: Describe one way to help to reduce
the problem and how it will help.
We need to decrease the fossil fuels that we burn.
We need to find alternative sources of energy, too.
Ÿ Paragraph 3: Describe another way to help
reduce the problem and how it will help.
Cutting down trees also causes global warming
because trees remove the carbon dioxide from the
air. If we increase the number of trees, we will
reduce global warming.
