5E Lesson Plan: Teacher(s) : Danielle Musil Date: December 14 Subject/Grade Level: 3 Materials
State Standards:
W.3.1- Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.
Lesson Objective(s):
By the end of the week, students will be able to write a paragraph that includes a topic
sentence, 3 supporting detail sentences, and a closing sentence.
Engagement:
We will begin the lesson as a whole group. I will explain what makes up a paragraph (topic
sentence, supporting sentences, closing sentences). We will then look over our “Paragraph
of the Week” worksheet and discuss what we are writing about (topic of the paragraph). As
a group, we will brainstorm some ideas for the topic, and then break off to write
individually.
Exploration:
As a group, we will brainstorm some ideas for the topic.
Break off to write individually.
Come together as small groups:
o Peer review their writings, making corrections suggested by their classmates.
We’ll come together as a whole to discuss what we wrote, and what changes we made (i.e.
spelling errors, punctuation, etc) that was corrected.
Explanation:
To help guide the students, I’ll show the students a simple paragraph writing done right. We
will discuss the elements of that paragraph, introducing the terms we are exploring that
week i.e. topic sentence, supporting sentences, details, closing sentence. I will then show
them a paragraph done wrong. We will correct it as a group, pointing out why the correction
is necessary. Then we will discuss our “Paragraph of the Week” worksheet.
Elaboration:
By breaking down the elements of a paragraph, the students will be able to better understand
how each one is important to the structure. They will have hands on practice of how to make
a paragraph and be able to execute the objective effectively.
Vocabulary: topic sentence, supporting sentences, details, closing sentences, peer review,
edit, rough draft, final draft.
This applies to their future writing capabilities. As they move through the school system,
they will be able to build on the basics that I’ve taught them with this extended lesson.
Evaluation:
By the end of the week, we should have a full paragraph that that has been peer review and
edited. We will share with the whole class on Fridays.
