EVOLUTION OF 20TH AND 21ST CENTURY MUSIC AND IMPORTANCE OF ARTS
Popular music includes a wide genre which consists of folk, alternative, acoustic, heavy metal, jazz, hip-
hop, new age, rap, rock, and rhythm and blues.
Folk Music
Folk Music is music that originates among the common people of a country or region, and is spread
about or passed down orally. It is characterized by simple melodies. In the original sense of the term, folk
music is music by and of the people. It arose and best survived in societies and places not yet affected by mass
communication and the commercialization of culture. It was transmitted by word of mouth and was shared and
performed by the entire community not by a special group of expert performers.
Examples of folk music are John Denver’s songs and Peter, Paul, and Mary’s songs.
During the onset of the 20th century, the term folk music took on a new meaning- folk music describes a
particular kind of popular music which culturally descended from or otherwise influenced by traditional folk
music. This new kind of folk music is most often performed by experts and professionals and is transmitted in
organized performances and commercially distributed recordings.
Folk music is synonymous with traditional music. Both words are used interchangeably among the
public and are not strictly defined.
The subjects of folk music are varied. Narrative verse is predominant in the folk music of many cultures.
Traditional epic poetry which was meant originally for oral performances are sometimes accompanied by
musical instruments, the outcomes of battles and other natural disasters or tragedies. Some folk songs recall
mysterious deaths or supernatural events. An example of songs of victory is the triumphant Song of Deborah
found in the Biblical Book of Judges. A lot of folk music also laments lost battles and wars and the lost of lives.
Folk heroes like Robin Hood and John Henry were immortalized in folk songs.
Hymns and other forms of traditional music are of traditional and unknown origin. To preserve the
lines of the Gregorian chant, western musical notations was originally made. The Gregorian chant was
originally taught as an oral tradition in monastic communities. Religious lore in song was preserved in
Christmas Carols and other traditional songs.
Other kinds of folk songs thrived. Among these are the work songs which enabled the workers to coordinate
their efforts with the songs’ rhythms. Army songs were sung as soldiers marched. Love poetry are prominent
features in folk songs. Other frequent subjects of folk songs are nursery and nonsense verses.
Alternative Music
This is also called modern rock. It is guitar-based with desultory male vocalists or chirpy female
vocalists.
Examples of alternative or modern rock music are the music of the Eraserheads and Barbie’s Cradle.
Acoustic Music
Acoustic music is guitar-based and has down-to-earth male or female vocalists. It is characterized by
simple, easy to follow tunes.
The music of Paolo Santos, Nyoy Volante, Nina, and Aiza Seguerra are examples of acoustic music.
Jazz Music
Jazz is American music born in the early part of the century from African rhythms and slave chants. It
has spread from its African-American roots to a worldwide audience. Jazz music developed from early
ensemble improvisation to big band swing to soloing brilliance of bop to thorny atonality and back to the
current rearticulating melody and harmony.
Jazz is a musical art from which the African-Americans developed from around the turn of 20 th century.
Blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response, polyrhythm, and improvisation characterized jazz music.
Jazz music, the first original art form to emerge from the United States of America, has been called “America’s
Classical Music”.
Roots of jazz music are embedded in the cultural and musical expression of West Africa and the
Western Sahel, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime, as well as in the military
band music of Europe. It gained popularity internationally by the 1920’s. Since then, later musical styles
worldwide were profoundly influenced by jazz music. To-date, different jazz styles continuously evolve.
American dance band style generally referred to as jazz is distinctly a popular art which had a
widespread influence on serious or nonpopular music. Ragtime is a pianistic art characterized by the
prominence of syncopation (ascending weak or unimportant beats or parts of beats in a measure) in various
patterns, conventional harmony, and regular phraseology, Ragtime bands originated in New Orleans and
composed of a group of Negro musicians who improvised ragtime tunes.
Blues is a style type of popular music which influenced both ragtime and later blues. The subject matter
is a lost or absent lover or self-pity. Examples of blues are W.C.Handy’s Memphis Blues and St. Louis Blues.
Jazz is essentially orchestral in terms of arrangement or improvisation. The arranger or the performer is more
important than the composer. The music of Earl Klugh is jazz music.
Hip-Hop Music and Rap Music
Hip-hop music pertains to the urbanized dressing, art, and speech of the ordinary people. It is
synonymous to rap music with its topics of political or social issues, spoken lyrics, and a background of
scratched records.
Examples of hip-hop and rap music are the music of Francis Magalona, Andrew E., and Salbakuta.
New Age Music
New age music is modern music characterized by quiet improvisation on the acoustic piano, guitar, and
synthesizers. It produces a dreamy, relaxing sound.
Examples of new age music are the voice of Enya in The Lord of the Rings and the theme songs of films.
Rock Music
Rock music is a combination of African-American rhythm, urban blues, folk, and country music which was
developed in the early 1950’s.
The earliest form of rock music is rock n’ roll which arose from multiple genres in the late 1940’s most
significantly jump blues. Chuck Berry invented rock n’ roll, but performers like Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, and
Elvis Presley popularized rock n’ roll music. It was Elvis Presley who fused rock n’ roll with country music
