The second issue of the annual Pictoplasma Magazine shines a light on 'Characters with a
Cause'. It features interviews with and statements by more than 20 artists, illustrators, designers
and filmmakers who address political, personal and environmental topics, speak up in favour of
social justice, or lend their voices to the fight for representation. In 2022, the main question
seems to be: can work any longer afford to be immune to today's urging political questions?
Among the contributors are Afro-Belgian 3D artist Loulou Joao; Turkish artist Esra Gulmen;
Baphoboy, from Thailand; US artist Matt Furie; Okuda San Miguel from Madrid and a
conversation with Ailbhe Keane.

SerraGlia is the alias of Italian architect and visual artist/designer Lorenzo Servi. Long fascinated
by cities and semiotics, he decided to create an artistic and slightly ironic visual statement about
a mysterious script developed by construction workers over the years. Made with adhesive tape,
these signs are readable by only a select group. Is this some sort of secret language? Or is there
in fact no meaning at all? SerraGlia does not seek to reveal the absolute truth of these found
signs and strangely runic symbols. Instead, he wants to question our perception of our
surroundings. Are things always as they seem?

Featuring unpublished and iconic images by some of the greatest modern fashion photographers
and artists, this timely tribute offers a dazzling review of more than five decades of the "enfant
terrible" of French fashion. In his avant-garde style imbued with humanism and humour, Jean
Paul Gaultier challenged, reinterpreted, and transgressed not only the codes of haute couture
and ready-to-wear but also those of our society, creating an inclusive fashion accompanied by a
social message formed by pluralistic beauties. Whether it is cinema or nature, punks or
Parisiennes, animals or men wearing skirts, the sources of Gaultier's inspiration seem endless
and inexhaustible.

There are deep concerns for the status of our shared commonwealth in the wake of the multiple
political controversies and social crises of the past two decades. This issue of 'Harvard Design'
addresses the status of "the public" in political and social discourse, in design thinking and
practice, and in the built environment itself. Leading public intellectuals, scholars, and
practitioners in architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, social sciences, and
humanities ponder the fate of the public in a world where xenophobic thinking and challenges to
collective responsibility are becoming ever more dominant. The magazine is guested edited by
Anita Berrizbeitia and Diane E. Davis.

What does it mean to be a designer in the digital age? Images are no longer fixed, well-defined
artefacts. Instead, they are increasingly automatically generated, interactive, and fluid entities that
are less directly the product of human handwork and more the result of complex machines,
algorithms, and software. Marijke Goeting examines the nature and cultural effects of media and
technologies that are crucial for the design of visual communication today. She analyses how we
have reflected on, experimented with, and imagined various approaches to these technologies
and suggests ways to engage critically, thoughtfully, and alternatively with the digital tools at
hand.

Creating pieces with an equal focus on sculptural and functional qualities, Rasmus Fenhann
works almost exclusively with wood, which he carefully selects for each project. His process
combines traditional and sometimes near-forgotten craft techniques with advanced technology
and tooling - including CAD sketching, visualization and processing. Fenhann's main source of
inspiration is traditional Japanese woodwork and Danish cabinetmaking, with his works often
incorporating personal interpretations of select aspects of these craft traditions. His work is also
stimulated by nature and the mathematical properties of natural forms - universal forms
unaffected by human control. Today he is considered one of the most important Scandinavian
designers within the field of hand-crafted collectible design.

'Checked Baggage' is the first of two graduation projects by Christien Meindertsma for Design
Academy Eindhoven. The book is an exhaustive catalogue of all the items confiscated from
travellers in a one-week period at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. Everything from cutlery,
boxcutters, and pocket knives, to hairdressers' scissors, wrenches, and nail clippers were among
the items seized and later photographed in taxonomic arrangements for the book. Meindertsma
captures the strangeness of this situation - the confiscation of sometimes very personal items at a
time of heightened security. Each limited edition copy comes packaged with an actual item
confiscated at the airport.

'Faire' is a bi-monthly magazine dedicated to graphic design and distributed in the form of
anthologies of three or four issues. This instalment features Sonia de Puineuf's examination of
the image of the eye in the production of modern and avant-garde artists, leading to an
understanding of how it is often treated as an autonomous motif. Further, there is an analysis of
Herbert Bayer's (1900-1985) approach to exhibiting photography by Remi Parcollet, plus
Catherine Geel's tribute to American functionalist designer George Nelson (1908-1986).
