BS 5400 Part 4.1 SELECTION OF LOAD COMBINATION

2 Cl. 4.4

Dead loads, Surcharge loads and soil lateral pressure forces are same for all cases. So,

above live loads are considered for the selection of load combination.

a. Combination 1
Permanent loads together with the appropriate primary live loads are considered.

b. Combination 2
Loads in Combination 1 together with wind, and, where erection is considered, temporary

erection loads.

Wind, and, temporary erection loads are negligible as concern substructure design. So the
combination 2 is same as combination 1.

c. Combination 3
Loads in Combination 1 together with those arising from restrain due to effect temperature

range and differences, and, where, erection is considered, temporary erection loads.

Temperature range and differences are not high tropical country like Sri Lanka and

negligible as concern substructure design. So the combination 3 is same as combination 1.

d. Combination 4
All permanent loads are considered together with appropriate primary live loads and
associated secondary live loads.

e. Combination 5
All permanent loads are considered together with the loads due to friction at bearings.

Combination 4 is critical, because longitudinal live loads are applied with appropriate live
loads and increase the tendency to overturn and increase of stresses in mass concrete
substructure.

So, Combination 4 is considered for the design of substructure.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Road Development Authority has a responsibility for the development of the road network to cater for the on-

going overall development programme of the country. Since road transport is the primary mode of transport in the

country, it is very vital that roads and bridges developed to promote efficient transport of people and goods. RDA

has a responsibility to plan the future road network taking in to consideration the future travel demand. It is

predicted that proposed bridge across Yan oya at Wahalkada would provide safe and comfortable access by

connecting Horowpothana and Thiriyaya.

The overall length of proposed bridge is 38.0 m and consists with mass concrete substructure and pretensioned

prestressed concrete superstructure. Bridge is having two equal spans and section consists with 4.2 m extra

wide carriageway and 0.9 m width footwalk.
