DEFINITION OF COORIDINATE MEASURING MACHINE

FIGURE 1.1 (COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINE

 A coordinate measuring Machine is a 3D device for

measuring the Physical geometrical Characteristics of an
object.

 CMM is a machine which takes reading in six degreed of

freedom and displays these readings in mathematical form.

 CMM is a specialized form of industrial robot.

PARTS OF CORDINATE MEASURING MACHINE

FIGURE 1.2 (PARTS OF CORDINATE MEASUIRNG MACHINE)

Coordinate-measuring machines include three main

components
A) The main structure which includes three axes of motion

B) Probing system

C) Data collection and reduction system - typically includes a machine

controller, desktop computer and application software
FIGURE1.3 MAIN STRUCTURE GANTRY TYPE FIGURE 1.4 AIR BEARING FIGURE 1.5 MAIN STRUCTURE BRIDGE TYPE

1)MACHINE BODY- In modern machines, the gantry-type superstructure has

two legs and is often called a bridge. This moves freely along the granite table with one leg
(often referred to as the inside leg) following a guide rail attached to one side of the granite
table. The opposite leg (often outside leg) simply rests on the granite table following the
vertical surface contour. Air bearings are the chosen method for ensuring friction free
travel. In these, compressed air is forced through a series of very small holes in a flat bearing
surface to provide a smooth but controlled air cushion on which the CMM can move in a
near frictionless manner which can be compensated for through software.
The movement of the bridge or gantry along the granite table forms one
axis of the XY plane. The bridge of the gantry contains a carriage which traverses between
the inside and outside legs and forms the other X or Y horizontal axis. The third axis of
movement (Z axis) is provided by the addition of a vertical quill or spindle which moves up
and down through the centre of the carriage. The touch probe forms the sensing device on
the end of the quill. The movement of the X, Y and Z axes fully describes the measuring
envelope. Optional rotary tables can be used to enhance the approachability of the
measuring probe to complicated work pieces. The rotary table as a fourth drive axis does
not enhance the measuring dimensions, which remain 3D, but it does provide a degree of
flexibility. Some touch probes are themselves powered rotary devices with the probe tip
able to swivel vertically through more than 180 degrees and through a full 360-degree
rotation.
FIGURE1.6 PROBING SYSTEM

2 PROBING SYSTEM) -Coordinate measuring machines (CMM) probes are

transducers that convert physical measurements into electrical signals by using numerous
measuring systems within the probe structure. CMM probes are a broad category of
instruments that use diverse technologies for direct and comparative measurements

FIGURE 1.7 CMM CONTROLLER

How Do Coordinate Measuring Machines Work?
 After placing a work piece on the machine table, a probe is used to
measure different points on it by mapping the x, y, z coordinates

 The probe operates either manually via an operator or automatically via a

control system.

 These points are then uploaded to a computer interface where they can be
analyzed using modeling software (e.g., CAD) and regression algorithms
for further development

Mounting
Sometimes a CMM requires a specific mounting style when incorporated into a
system or method of operation. These mounting options include bench top,
freestanding, handheld, and portable.

A. Bench top: - machines mount on a bench top or desk. This is typical of

most CMMs.

B. Freestanding: - machines can support themselves and do not require

mounting.

C. Portable machines: - are devices that may be moved freely and are not
designed to be bolted or hardwired in place. Handheld machines are a subset of
portable devices describing those designed to be operated by hand.
