This unit focuses on solving math puzzels by counting the objects in a quick and easy way with simple addition and subtration math instead of
Topic/Unit of Study counting each individual object one by one. This will take place over three periods. The first will be the actual assignment, the second will be
& Time Allotment going over the answers once the worksheets are handed back. and the third will be the assesment on kahoot after the students have had some
time to study.

Grade/Level Grade 2

The objective of this activity is to help students understand that counting can be done in a simple way. Students will understand that instead of

counting individually, they can use simple addition and subtraction to get to the answers faster.

Students will listen to the story The Grapes of Math by Greg Tang and then be asked to complete the a worksheet that asks how to get the
answer by thinking outside the box. Students will have to show their work so that it is clear they did not just count each object individually. Once
Summary they have completed their work, the assignment will be collected. Over the next couple of days, the students will get their work back and the
answers from the book will be gone over. If students counted a different way that was still faster than counting individually, the teacher will go
over if that is an okay way to answer the question. After they have some time to study, give them a quiz with a kahoot! game.

IMPLEMENTATION

During this time in second grade, students will already know simle addition and subraction. This lesson just takes that a little step further and lets
them do both, while being visual so they are still able to count the pictures if needed. This lesson will also fit into teaching students about rows
Learning Context
and columns. Once they have a better understanding of how rows and columns work, they will be able to visually see them in the pictures of the
book and do the math even faster instea of automatically thinking they have to count each object individually.

At the start of the lesson, students will be called over to sit on the rug where The Grapes of Math will be read aloud. (Make sure not to spoil the
end of how to group the objects together). 

Then students will be told to go back to their seats and instructions will be given. The students will each be completing their own assignments but
will be placed into groups to brainstorm and talk about what they think the answers are. (If their desks are already in groups, let them stay in
those groups, if not, place them into groups 

The students will sit in groups either at their desks if they are already stationed in groups, or around the classroom if you put them into groups.
The teacher will give each group one picture at a time and let them discuss each one individually for about 5 minutes. The students will need to
look at each picture and write out on their assignment the way they got the answer without having to count each object individually. During each
of the five minutes, walk around the classroom to help and answer any questions that may be asked.

Procedure After each of the pictures have been handed out and the last one has had its five minutes, have the students make a pile of their work on your
desk and have one student in each group neatly put all of the pictures into a separate pile on your desk. Once they are done, have them sit in their
seats. This lesson is done for the rest of the day.

Get the assignment back to the students as soon as it is possible, making sure there is time to go over all of the answers when they get it back.
Show them the rest of the book, which contains all of the answers. If the students are having trouble understanding just the pictures, do the
problem out on the board and visually show them by circling, making arrows, and show them what to add and/or subtract. After they have the
answers, let them use their assignments as a study guid for a few days. 

 Now that they have had an assignment, went over the answers in class, and had time to study, it is time to assess them a little bit. Put on the
kahoot! game and have them choose the correct answer. The kahoot! will ask students different questions about grouping, which rows they
subtract from, & the total amount in the picture After each question, make sure to go over the correct answer and why for the students who had
trouble and got it wrong.

For students who are visually imparied, you can glue things as macaroni and pom pom balls to the picture. You can give them special instructions

Differentiated that where the macaroni is, there is an object to count, but where there is a pom pom ball, they have to subtract. This way, even if they can see a
Instruction little bit, or not at all, they are able to feel the 3D picture and still participate in the activity. You will still be walking around the classroom if they
need more help or instructions.

This could be done as a couple students at a time if there are not enough devices for each student however, they would then need to go
into a different room so that they do not see the answers
The number of computers required is 1 per student.
Students Familiarity with Software Tool:
Whether students have used kahoot! at this time or not, it is very simple to teach them how. The device screen will show at most four
colored boxes with a different shape on each one. Therefore the students should be able to match the answers from the projector to the
devices in their hands
