Detailed Lesson Plan in Volcano

This document contains a detailed lesson plan for teaching students about the classification of volcanoes. The objectives are for students to characterize and differentiate between active and inactive volcanoes, and classify and locate volcanoes in the Philippines. The lesson includes motivational activities like a jigsaw puzzle comparing volcano pictures and a concept mapping activity. Students will analyze the characteristics of active versus inactive volcanoes. The teacher will conclude by ensuring students understand that volcanoes can be classified as either active if they have erupted within the last 10,000 years, or inactive if they have not erupted in over 10,000 years.

the Philippines.
B. Performance Standards: The learner should be able to participate in activities that
reduces the risks and lessen effects of climate change.
C. Learning Competencies:
a. Characterize a volcano;
b. Differentiate active and inactive volcanoes;
c. Classify volcanoes as active and inactive; and
d. Analyze and locate the volcanoes by using the Philippine map.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Classification of Volcano

May I ask who can still remember our topic
yesterday?
Mary grace: The types of volcanoes are
So, what are the types of volcanoes? shield, cone and composite volcanoes.

Janet: Composite volcano are steep

What are the differences among the three side cones formed from layers of ash

and the largest volcano and the cider
cone volcano is the smallest.
Very good!

Since everybody already understood our last

topic, We can now proceed to our next topic. But
before that, Let me introduce to you first our
objectives for today’s lesson.

(Presentation of the objectives)

B. Motivation (Jigsaw Puzzle)

Now, I have here a set of two pictures. All you
have to do is to compare and contrast the
characteristics of the volcanoes. I will give you 1
minute to jot down your answers in your notes.

C. Activity
Based from your notes, write down 5
characteristics of volcanoes and you have to
organize into the following concept map. I will
give you 3 minutes to finish the concept map. (Group 1 &2 presentation)
Then, I need 1 volunteer from each group the
explain their concept map.

(Group 1- Good job Clap Wilma: Our topic for today is all about
Group 2- Ang Galing Clap) Classifications of Volcanoes.

Based on our activities, what do you think our

topic for today? Janet: Volcano is a …..

Very good!

D. Analysis

Our topic for today is all about Classifications of

Volcano. I will ask you first, in your own idea what
is a volcano?

Very good!
A volcano is an opening in the earth’s crust
through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases
escape.

Volcanoes are among the most devastating

forces on earth. But not all volcanoes are the
same. And that’s what we are going to tackle
about.

Now, let’s differentiate active and inactive

volcanoes. There are several ways with which
volcanoes can be classified. The Philippines
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology
(PHIVOLCS) adapted a system where volcanoes
can be classified as active or inactive.

ACTIVE VOLCANOES- Those that have a record Lylani: Active and inactive volcanoes.
of eruption within the last 600 years or those that
erupted 10,000 years ago based on analyses of
their materials. Grace: Active volcano has a record of
eruption with 600-10,000 years while
INACTIVE VOLCANOES- Those that have not inactive volcano has no record of
erupted for the last 10, 000 years and their eruption for the last 10, 000 years.
physical form is being changed by agents of
weathering and erosion through formation of
deep and long gullies.

E. Abstraction
